Backend Engineer Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a backend engineer in Pennsylvania?
Backend engineering carries no state-issued license in Pennsylvania, so the path runs through education and demonstrated technical skill. Most Pennsylvania employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, though strong portfolios and bootcamp credentials from programs at institutions like Carnegie Mellon or Temple have opened doors at Philadelphia and Pittsburgh tech companies. Building projects, contributing to open-source work, and earning cloud certifications strengthens a candidate's standing considerably.
How much do backend engineers make in Pennsylvania?
Backend engineers in Pennsylvania earn a median of about $126,550 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,750 for the lowest 10% to over $178,080 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire backend engineers in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring backend engineers in Pennsylvania right now include CVS Health, BNY, and Comcast, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Pennsylvania's mix of large financial services firms, health systems, and enterprise software companies means backend roles here tend to emphasize reliability, compliance-aware architecture, and integration with complex legacy systems.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most backend engineer jobs?
Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and King of Prussia account for the most backend engineer openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia leads because of its dense cluster of fintech firms, health-tech companies, and Comcast's technology operations, while Pittsburgh's strength in robotics research, autonomous systems, and a growing startup ecosystem centered around Carnegie Mellon drives consistent demand, and Harrisburg contributes roles tied to state government IT modernization and defense contractors operating nearby.
Are there remote backend engineer jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 60% of backend engineer openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how naturally suited the role is to distributed work. The most remote-friendly segments are API development, microservices architecture, and cloud infrastructure work, where collaboration happens through code reviews and async tooling rather than on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a backend engineer in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an associate or junior software engineer role, which many large Pennsylvania employers post specifically for new graduates. Companies like Comcast, SEI Investments, and UPMC run structured new-grad programs and rotational technical tracks that place candidates without commercial experience into backend-adjacent work. Lateral moves from QA engineering, data analyst, or DevOps support roles are also common entry points. A portfolio of deployed projects or a cloud certification gives Pennsylvania applicants a concrete edge over candidates with credentials alone.
Where can I find and apply to backend engineer jobs in Pennsylvania?
You can find and apply to backend engineer jobs in Pennsylvania on Migrate Mate, which lists current Pennsylvania openings from employers actively hiring. Search for roles that match your experience level and specialization, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
