About the Community Safety Department

The Department of Community Safety serves as a central hub coordinating public safety efforts across city agencies, community organizations, and partners. The department focuses on prevention, rehabilitation, and accountability by overseeing corrections and custody operations, supporting reentry services, and expanding access to behavioral health and support resources. It also manages data tracking, performance measurement, and cross-agency initiatives to address ongoing safety concerns and improve outcomes. Through a collaborative and phased approach, the department aims to reduce recidivism, strengthen community safety, and promote more effective, equitable public safety systems without replacing traditional law enforcement functions.

This position plans, directs, and oversees administrative support services within the corrections facility. This position is responsible for managing staff assigned to intake, booking, release, classification, and inmate programming. This position is responsible for administrative and managerial work leading in the planning, maintenance, and execution of department contracts, procurement and grant management. An employee of this class works with almost complete independence and is responsible for the use of considerable initiative and judgement in establishing procedures, processes, controls and carrying out various assignments. This position reports to the Deputy Director of Administration and will have 2-6 direct reports.

What You'll Do:

• Confers with and advises department or division heads on citywide administrative and business activities.
• Direct, coordinate, and evaluate daily operations of the Correctional Specialists.
• Review workload trends and staffing allocation.
• Ensures proper maintenance of inmate records and data integrity.
• Directs inmate classification processes and housing assignment decision.
• Ensures classification practices support facility safety, security and inmate management objectives.
• Monitors risk assessment and classification review processes.
• Oversees development, implementation, and evaluation of inmate programs.
• Monitor program participation, effectiveness, and outcomes.
• Ensures programs support rehabilitation and recidivism reduction goals.
• Manage and coordinate contracts related to inmate services, and other correctional services.
• Monitor vendor performance and contract compliance.
• Review deliverables, service levels, and invoices.
• Assist with identifying grant funding opportunities aligned with organizational objectives.
• Monitor grant performance measures, and reporting requirements.
• Ensure compliance with grant regulations and audit standards.
• Provide strategic oversight for agency programs.
• Monitor program outcomes and return on investment.
• Conduct performance evaluations.
• Provide coaching, mentoring, and professional development opportunities.

REQUIRES

• An accredited Bachelor’s degree and six years professional private or public sector experience in managing more complex organization operations, projects, programs or services.
• OR High school graduation and 10 years professional private or public sector experience in managing more complex organizational operations, projects, programs, or services.

Preference

• Experience in contract management, grant administration and compliance, program evaluation methodologies, strategic planning, organizational leadership, and strong oral and written communication.
