Chief Technology Officer Jobs in District of Columbia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a chief technology officer in District of Columbia?
Becoming a chief technology officer in District of Columbia typically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or information systems, often supplemented by an MBA or graduate degree in technology management. No state-issued license is required for the role, but federal contractor positions frequently require a security clearance issued through the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency. Most executives advance through senior director or vice president of engineering roles at D.C.-area agencies, contractors, or technology firms.
How much do chief technology officers make in District of Columbia?
Chief technology officers in District of Columbia earn a median of about $195,190 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $126,520 for the lowest 10% to over $286,280 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire chief technology officers in District of Columbia?
Employers hiring chief technology officers in District of Columbia right now include Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center, The George Washington University Hospital, and United States Department of Justice, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. The D.C. market is particularly active among federal contractors, government consulting firms, and technology companies that service civilian and defense agencies throughout the region.
Which District of Columbia cities have the most chief technology officer jobs?
The cities with the most chief technology officer openings in District of Columbia are Washington. Washington D.C. drives the overwhelming majority of demand given its concentration of federal agencies, defense contractors, and major consulting headquarters, while nearby suburban areas like Bethesda and McLean reflect the overflow of firms that support the federal technology ecosystem from just outside the district.
Are there remote chief technology officer jobs in District of Columbia?
Yes, though they are less common than in purely commercial markets, given how many D.C.-area roles involve classified programs or in-person executive responsibilities. About 50% of chief technology officer openings tied to District of Columbia are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with hybrid arrangements more common than fully remote. Strategic and advisory functions, such as technology planning and vendor oversight, are the parts of the role most likely to allow remote flexibility.
How can I get hired as a chief technology officer in District of Columbia with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is through federal technology programs that develop senior leaders over time. D.C.-area agencies and contractors like Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, and Accenture Federal Services run structured leadership development and rotational programs for senior engineers and directors who lack the C-suite title. Moving from a vice president of engineering, director of IT, or enterprise architect role at a government contractor is the most common lateral entry point. Obtaining a security clearance early and building a record of managing large federal IT programs gives candidates a meaningful edge.
Where can I find and apply to chief technology officer jobs in District of Columbia?
You can find and apply to chief technology officer jobs in District of Columbia on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the region. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your background and seniority, and apply directly to each employer through the listings.
