Civil Engineering Intern Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a civil engineering intern job in Chicago?
Focus your search on Chicago's public infrastructure and transportation sectors, where the city's ongoing transit, roadway, and water system projects create steady intern demand. Engineering consultancies clustered in the Loop and along the Chicago River corridor hire the most interns. A strong edge comes from familiarity with AutoCAD or Civil 3D, any coursework in structural or geotechnical engineering, and connections through university programs partnered with the Chicago Department of Transportation or the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District.
Which companies hire civil engineering interns in Chicago?
Companies currently hiring civil engineering interns in Chicago include AECOM, Jacobs, and WSP, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Chicago's hiring mix skews toward mid-size engineering consultancies, large municipal contractors, and public agencies tied to the city's infrastructure programs.
Are there remote civil engineering intern jobs in Chicago?
Yes, though remote work is limited for a hands-on, field-oriented role like civil engineering. About 69% of civil engineering intern openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those tend to be desk-based positions focused on drafting, data analysis, or environmental reporting rather than site work. On-site or hybrid schedules remain the norm for roles involving construction observation or lab work.
How can I get a civil engineering intern job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is through public-sector or quasi-public employers such as the Chicago Department of Transportation, the Chicago Transit Authority, or the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, all of which run structured intern programs that prioritize enrolled students over experienced candidates. Municipal contractors bidding on city infrastructure projects also hire entry-level interns regularly. A portfolio of relevant coursework, even without paid experience, combined with CADD proficiency, tends to carry more weight locally than a polished resume alone.
Which industries hire the most civil engineering interns in Chicago?
Most civil engineering intern openings in Chicago sit in Consulting & Professional Services, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Chicago's role as a regional hub for transit investment, lakefront and waterway infrastructure, and large-scale urban redevelopment keeps those sectors consistently active for entry-level engineering talent.
