Clinical Documentation Specialist Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a clinical documentation specialist in Pennsylvania?
To become a clinical documentation specialist in Pennsylvania, you typically need a health information management degree or a clinical background such as nursing or coding, combined with a nationally recognized credential. Pennsylvania employers strongly prefer candidates holding the Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist credential from ACDIS or the Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner credential from AHIMA. Neither requires a Pennsylvania state license, but AHIMA-accredited HIM programs are available at several Pennsylvania colleges, and completing one gives candidates a clear competitive edge in the state's hiring market.
How much do clinical documentation specialists make in Pennsylvania?
Clinical documentation specialists in Pennsylvania earn a median of about $46,840 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,490 for the lowest 10% to over $77,880 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire clinical documentation specialists in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring clinical documentation specialists in Pennsylvania right now include Thomas Jefferson University & Jefferson Health, One Senior Care, and WellSpan Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Pennsylvania's large integrated health systems, including academic medical centers in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, tend to post the most consistent volume of clinical documentation openings throughout the year.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most clinical documentation specialist jobs?
Philadelphia, Erie, and York have the most clinical documentation specialist openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia leads because of its dense concentration of academic medical centers and large health systems, Pittsburgh draws steady demand from UPMC's extensive regional network, and Harrisburg reflects the clinical documentation needs of mid-state hospital systems and state government-affiliated healthcare programs serving central Pennsylvania.
Are there remote clinical documentation specialist jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, and more than most healthcare roles, because clinical documentation improvement work centers on chart review and provider query rather than hands-on patient care. About 50% of clinical documentation specialist openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how well the role adapts to distributed work. Inpatient CDI query work and outpatient HCC coding are the functions most consistently offered in fully remote arrangements by Pennsylvania health systems.
How can I get hired as a clinical documentation specialist in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is transitioning from a related role such as inpatient medical coder, health information technician, or registered nurse into a junior CDI specialist or CDI auditor position. Large Pennsylvania employers like UPMC and Penn Medicine periodically bring on CDI associates or coding support staff who receive on-the-job documentation training. Earning the AHIMA CCS credential or completing an AHIMA-accredited HIM program at a Pennsylvania institution strengthens your candidacy significantly when you have limited direct CDI experience.
Where can I find and apply to clinical documentation specialist jobs in Pennsylvania?
You can find and apply to clinical documentation specialist jobs in Pennsylvania on Migrate Mate, which lists current Pennsylvania openings from employers across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and credentials and apply directly to the ones that match.
