Commissioning Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a commissioning engineer in California?
Most commissioning engineers in California start with a bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or systems engineering and then pursue licensure through the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists, which oversees the Professional Engineer credential required for many senior and stamping roles. Employers across the state also value industry certifications from organizations like ASHRAE or the Building Commissioning Association. Entry typically begins in field or junior engineering roles before advancing to full commissioning responsibilities.
How much do commissioning engineers make in California?
Commissioning engineers in California earn a median of about $130,850 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,950 for the lowest 10% to over $212,130 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire commissioning engineers in California?
Employers hiring commissioning engineers in California right now include Tetra Tech, LotusWorks, and WSP in the U.S., based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of large commercial construction projects, utility infrastructure programs, and semiconductor manufacturing facilities means demand is spread across multiple sectors rather than a single industry.
Which California cities have the most commissioning engineer jobs?
San Francisco, Santa Clara, and Los Angeles account for the most commissioning engineer openings in California. The Bay Area's concentration of technology campuses and data center construction, Los Angeles's large commercial real estate and entertainment infrastructure projects, and San Diego's defense and biotech facilities all generate consistent demand, which is why those metros dominate the distribution of openings across the state.
Are there remote commissioning engineer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 36% of commissioning engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how hands-on the role fundamentally is. The parts of the work most suited to remote are pre-design review, documentation, and report writing, while functional testing, site walks, and equipment verification almost always require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a commissioning engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for commissioning technician or field engineer associate roles at large mechanical and electrical contractors operating in California, such as those serving the state's data center build-out and clean energy sectors. Moving laterally from adjacent roles like HVAC technician, controls technician, or project engineer coordinator is a well-worn path. Earning an EIT designation through the California Board for Professional Engineers and pursuing an ASHRAE or Building Commissioning Association certification gives candidates a concrete credential edge before they have deep experience.
Where can I find and apply to commissioning engineer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to commissioning engineer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across industries including clean energy, construction, and building systems. Find the roles that fit your experience and apply directly.
