Verify your licensure transfers across state lines
Advocates operates under government contracts that often require state-specific licensure, such as an LCSW or LMHC. Confirm your credentials are recognized in Massachusetts before applying, since an unlicensed candidate complicates the sponsorship case significantly.
Target open requisitions in government-contracted programs
Advocates staffs mental health roles tied to public sector contracts, which means hiring cycles follow contract timelines, not just open headcount. Roles tied to government programs tend to have more structured onboarding and stronger sponsorship precedent than discretionary hires.
Ask directly about H-1B cap-exempt eligibility
Nonprofit behavioral health organizations can qualify as H-1B cap-exempt entities under USCIS rules if they meet the research or higher education affiliation criteria. Advocates' HR team can confirm whether your specific role and program qualify, which affects your filing timeline entirely.
Align your resume to the specialty occupation standard
USCIS requires mental health counseling roles to meet the specialty occupation threshold, meaning a bachelor's degree in a directly related field is the floor. Frame your degree, supervised hours, and clinical focus explicitly around the role description Advocates posts.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Advocates mental health openings by visa type
Advocates posts multiple mental health counseling roles at any given time, and not all carry the same sponsorship profile. Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for Advocates positions that have supported H-1B or OPT candidates so you apply where sponsorship is already established.

Does Advocates sponsor H-1B visas for Mental Health Counselors?
Yes, Advocates has sponsored H-1B visas for mental health counseling roles. The organization operates under government contracts and nonprofit status, which may make certain positions eligible for H-1B cap-exempt processing through USCIS. Whether a specific role qualifies depends on the program it sits in, so confirm the cap-exempt status with Advocates' HR team early in the process.
How do I apply for Mental Health Counseling jobs at Advocates?
You can browse open mental health counseling positions at Advocates directly through their careers page or through Migrate Mate, which filters Advocates' listings by visa sponsorship eligibility. When applying, make sure your resume explicitly maps your clinical training and licensure to the role requirements, since government-contracted positions often have credentialing thresholds baked into the job description.
Which visa types does Advocates commonly use for Mental Health Counseling roles?
Advocates has sponsored candidates through the H-1B, and the organization also works with F-1 OPT and CPT holders during training and early employment. TN visa holders from Canada or Mexico in qualifying counseling-adjacent occupations may also be considered. The right pathway depends on your nationality, degree field, and the specific program you're hired into.
What qualifications does Advocates expect for Mental Health Counseling positions?
Most roles require at minimum a master's degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or a closely related field, along with supervised clinical hours toward licensure. Government-contracted programs often require candidates to be license-eligible or fully licensed under Massachusetts standards, such as LCSW, LMHC, or equivalent. Relevant experience in community mental health or public sector settings strengthens your application considerably.
How long does the sponsorship and hiring process take at Advocates?
From offer to start date, the timeline depends heavily on visa type. H-1B transfers for candidates already holding status can move within weeks. New H-1B filings outside cap-exempt processing are subject to USCIS standard or premium processing timelines. OPT candidates should account for their remaining authorized work period and initiate the H-1B process well before expiration to avoid a status gap.
