Tailor your resume to FPGA and hardware keywords
Altera's Engineering roles heavily emphasize programmable logic and semiconductor design. Align your resume to reflect hands-on FPGA, RTL, or EDA tool experience so your application signals a direct match to their core technical stack.
Identify which Engineering teams file LCAs
DOL's public LCA disclosure data shows which job titles and work locations Altera has filed for historically. Cross-referencing this with open roles helps you target postings where sponsorship infrastructure is already established for that specific Engineering function.
Clarify your visa type before the offer stage
TN status covers certain Engineering roles for Canadian and Mexican nationals without the H-1B lottery, but the job duties must fit a qualifying NAFTA occupation category. Raise this with the recruiter early so the offer letter reflects the correct visa pathway.
Time your OPT application to protect your start date
USCIS recommends filing your OPT EAD application up to 90 days before your program end date. For a hardware engineering role at Altera, a delayed EAD can push your start date past an offer's validity window, so file as early as USCIS allows.
Find open Engineering roles on Migrate Mate
Browse Altera's current Engineering openings filtered by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate, so you're only spending time on roles where your immigration status is already a known fit before you apply.
Prepare for technical screens covering low-level hardware design
Altera's Engineering interviews typically test digital logic, timing analysis, and chip-level integration depth. Arriving with concrete project examples that demonstrate end-to-end hardware ownership makes the sponsorship conversation easier because the technical fit is already clear.

Find Engineering at Altera JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Altera sponsor H-1B visas for Engineers?
Yes, Altera sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Engineering roles. The company operates as an E-Verify employer and has filed H-1B Labor Condition Applications with the DOL across a range of Engineering specializations, particularly in hardware and semiconductor design. Your role must qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field is typically required.
Which visa types does Altera commonly use for Engineering roles?
Altera supports H-1B, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and TN visas for Engineering positions. OPT and CPT are common entry points for recent graduates, particularly those finishing degrees in electrical engineering or computer engineering. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying Engineering occupations. H-1B remains the primary long-term sponsorship pathway for those not covered by the other categories.
What qualifications does Altera expect for Engineering roles?
Altera's Engineering positions in the Electronics and Hardware space generally require a bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related field. Roles focused on FPGA development, semiconductor design, or embedded systems typically expect hands-on experience with RTL design, hardware verification, or EDA toolchains. Advanced degrees are a differentiator for senior and principal-level positions.
How do I apply for Engineering jobs at Altera?
You can browse Altera's open Engineering roles filtered by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate, which surfaces positions where your immigration status is a known fit. Once you identify a target role, apply directly through Altera's careers portal. Tailor your application to reflect specific hardware or semiconductor experience that maps to the job description, and confirm sponsorship eligibility with the recruiter early in the process.
How do I time the H-1B process if I receive an offer from Altera?
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed once per year, with USCIS opening registration in March for an October 1 start date. If your offer falls outside that window, Altera may be able to extend your OPT or use cap-exempt status if applicable. Confirming your current status and its expiration date with Altera's HR team immediately after receiving an offer helps both sides plan around USCIS deadlines without losing the role.
