INTRODUCTION
At Apple, new ideas have a way of becoming phenomenal products, services, and customer experiences very quickly. Imagine what you could do here. Bring passion and dedication to your job and there's no telling what you could accomplish.
We are a team of software engineers developing web-based tools and native applications for Apple teams. Our work empowers Apple engineers and researchers to build the products that inspire and delight millions every day.
We're looking for a Site Reliability Engineer who thinks like a systems engineer first and an operator second. You won't just keep things running - you'll shape how our platform evolves. Our team operates 50+ services across Kubernetes and AWS, handles sensitive health and research data, and is ramping up many architectural shifts: new service-to-service auth patterns, event-driven pipelines, and a move from on-prem to cloud-native infrastructure. We need someone who gets excited about that kind of work, can reason about distributed systems at the design level, and is a strong enough communicator to bring the rest of the team along.
DESCRIPTION
The Human Engineering Software team builds tools used across Apple for user studies, research participant management, health data collection, and privacy-preserving analytics. Our infrastructure spans Django backends, Kubernetes clusters (self-hosted and AWS), PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka, Elasticsearch and a growing set of internal service integrations.
This role is engineering-forward SRE. You'll spend as much time designing systems as operating them. You'll work closely with our full-stack engineers to improve how services communicate, how we observe production behavior, and how we ship changes safely. You'll have a seat at the architecture table - we want you proposing solutions, not just implementing them.
Responsibilities
-
Platform & Reliability Engineering - Own the reliability of our Kubernetes-hosted services across AWS and self-hosted clusters: deployments, scaling, capacity planning, certificate management, and secrets rotation. Design and implement SLO-driven observability: define meaningful SLIs, build dashboards that answer "is the system healthy?" not just "is the pod running?" Drive incident response and blameless postmortems.
-
Distributed Systems & Architecture - Partner with the architecture team on system design: service-to-service authentication (OIDC, gateway auth), event-driven messaging (Kafka), API gateway patterns. Design the infrastructure layer to make architecture proposals real in production. Evaluate and recommend new tools, patterns, and platforms and write code when it's the right tool, whether that's a deployment operator, a health check service, or a data pipeline component. This isn't a YAML-only role.
-
Engineering Enablement - Make the team efficient; own CI/CD pipelines and GitOps practices, owning tests to verify production tools are functioning correctly, build self-service automation, evolve our observability and security posture, and communicate infrastructure decisions clearly across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
-
BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience, with 5+ years of experience in distributed systems.
-
Deep experience with Kubernetes in production - cluster operations, networking, storage, troubleshooting.
-
Strong proficiency designing and operating services in AWS (EC2, EKS, RDS, S3, IAM, VPC).
-
Hands-on infrastructure-as-code experience (Terraform, Helm, or equivalent).
-
Proficiency in at least one backend language (Python, Go, or similar) - you can write production services, not just scripts.
-
Experience with CI/CD pipeline design and GitOps workflows.
-
Strong understanding of networking fundamentals: DNS, load balancing, TLS, firewall rules, service discovery.
-
Excellent communication skills. You can explain a complex system to a room of engineers who didn't build it.
-
Experience building internal automation or self-service tooling (Slack bots, CLI tools, workflow orchestration) that reduced manual operational work.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
-
BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience, with 7+ years of experience in distributed systems.
-
Experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar messaging systems).
-
Experience with service mesh or API gateway patterns (Istio, Envoy, Kong, or similar).
-
Familiarity with Django/Python web applications and their operational characteristics (Celery, Gunicorn, PostgreSQL).
-
Experience with observability tooling beyond basic monitoring: distributed tracing, SLO frameworks, structured logging.
-
Background working with sensitive data (health data, PII) and associated compliance requirements.
-
Experience leading incident response and building on-call culture.
-
Contributions to internal or open-source infrastructure tooling.

Align your SRE credentials to Apple's stack
Apple's SRE teams work heavily with large-scale distributed systems, custom silicon infrastructure, and internal tooling rather than off-the-shelf cloud platforms. Highlight experience with bare-metal environments, low-latency systems, or hardware-adjacent reliability work in your resume and portfolio.
Target Apple's infrastructure and platform teams
Apple posts SRE roles across distinct verticals including Apple Maps, iCloud, and Apple Pay. Filtering by team in job listings helps you tailor your application and signals genuine familiarity with the business unit's reliability challenges before your first interview.
Clarify your visa category before the offer stage
Apple sponsors multiple nonimmigrant categories for SREs, including H-1B, E-3, H-1B1, and TN. Knowing which category applies to your nationality and current status lets you flag it early in recruiter conversations rather than creating delays during offer negotiation.
Understand Apple's H-1B lottery timing constraints
If you need H-1B sponsorship, USCIS only accepts registrations in March for an October 1 start date. Apple's hiring cycles don't pause for the lottery, so discuss with your recruiter how an offer would be structured if your registration isn't selected in a given year.
Use Migrate Mate to find open SRE roles at Apple
Apple's SRE openings are posted across multiple internal and external channels and don't always surface clearly for international applicants. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Site Reliability Engineer roles at Apple that are open to visa sponsorship, so you're only applying where it's confirmed.
Prepare for Apple's immigration process during onboarding
After accepting an offer, Apple's legal team initiates the visa petition, but you'll need to provide academic credentials, employment history, and passport records quickly. Having certified copies of your degree and a complete employment timeline ready before your start date prevents filing delays.

Find Site Reliability Engineer at Apple JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Apple sponsor H-1B visas for Site Reliability Engineers?
Yes, Apple sponsors H-1B visas for Site Reliability Engineers. SRE roles at Apple qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS guidelines because they require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related technical field. Apple handles petitions through its in-house immigration team, and sponsorship is standard practice for this function across its infrastructure and platform engineering groups.
Which visa types does Apple commonly use for Site Reliability Engineer roles?
Apple sponsors H-1B, H-1B1, E-3, TN, and F-1 OPT and CPT for Site Reliability Engineers. H-1B is the most common path for non-treaty-country nationals. Australian citizens can pursue the E-3, Canadians and Mexicans can use TN, and Chilean and Singaporean nationals qualify for H-1B1. Students finishing degrees can start under F-1 OPT while Apple initiates a longer-term petition. Apple also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for this role.
What qualifications does Apple expect for Site Reliability Engineer positions?
Apple's SRE postings typically require a bachelor's degree in computer science, systems engineering, or a closely related field. Practical experience with large-scale distributed systems, on-call incident response, and automation is weighted heavily. Familiarity with Apple's hardware-software integration model is a differentiator, as many SRE roles touch custom silicon infrastructure or low-latency network services rather than purely cloud-native environments.
How do I apply for Site Reliability Engineer jobs at Apple?
Applications go through Apple's careers portal, but not all listings clearly indicate visa sponsorship availability. For international applicants, the most efficient approach is to use Migrate Mate to filter for Site Reliability Engineer openings at Apple that are confirmed for sponsorship, then apply directly through Apple's system. After applying, Apple's recruiters typically screen for technical fit before immigration status comes up in the conversation.
How do I plan my timeline if I need Apple to sponsor my visa?
Timeline depends heavily on your visa category. E-3 and TN petitions can move quickly, sometimes within weeks of an offer. H-1B requires USCIS lottery registration in March, with work authorization starting October 1 at the earliest, meaning an offer made in April may not translate to a start date for six months. F-1 OPT holders can start sooner if their authorization is current. Aligning your job search timing with the H-1B registration window is the most common planning gap for SRE candidates targeting Apple.
