Certify Your ASE Credentials Before Applying
AutoNation hiring managers prioritize ASE-certified technicians. Getting certified before you apply removes a common objection at the screening stage and signals that your skills meet U.S. automotive industry standards, which strengthens any visa sponsorship justification your employer files.
Target Dealership Locations With Active Openings
AutoNation operates branded dealerships across dozens of metros. Applying to locations with multiple open Maintenance Technician requisitions signals active hiring demand, which makes it easier for HR to initiate sponsorship paperwork rather than treating your application as a one-off exception.
Clarify TN Eligibility for Your Specific Function
If you're a Canadian or Mexican citizen, TN status can cover certain technician roles under the USMCA, but the job duties and your credentials must match a qualifying occupation category. Confirm with USCIS guidance that your specific technician function qualifies before relying on this pathway.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter AutoNation Openings by Visa Type
Searching broadly wastes time at dealerships that don't sponsor. Migrate Mate lets you filter AutoNation's Maintenance Technician openings by the visa types they've historically supported, so you're only investing effort in roles where sponsorship is a realistic outcome.
Align Your OPT Start Date With Dealership Hiring Cycles
AutoNation dealerships tend to hire technicians on a rolling basis as service bay demand rises. If you're on F-1 OPT, time your application so your authorization start date lands within the 60-day grace window, giving hiring managers a clean onboarding timeline without a gap in your work authorization.
Confirm the Sponsoring Entity Before Accepting an Offer
AutoNation's dealerships can operate under different legal entities depending on the brand and location. Before you accept an offer, verify which legal entity will appear on your H-1B petition or LCA filing with DOL, since a mismatch between your offer letter and the petitioning entity can delay or complicate your filing.

Does AutoNation sponsor H-1B visas for Maintenance Technicians?
AutoNation does sponsor H-1B visas for Maintenance Technician roles. The process requires the company to file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL and a petition with USCIS on your behalf. Sponsorship availability can vary by location and the specific dealership entity, so confirming with the hiring team early in the interview process is the most reliable way to assess your specific situation.
How do I apply for Maintenance Technician jobs at AutoNation?
You can browse and apply for Maintenance Technician openings at AutoNation through Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles where AutoNation has a track record of visa sponsorship. From there, applications typically move through a recruiter screen, a technical skills assessment, and interviews with the dealership's service management team before an offer is extended.
Which visa types does AutoNation commonly use for Maintenance Technician roles?
AutoNation has sponsored Maintenance Technicians through H-1B, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and TN visa pathways. F-1 OPT is common for recent graduates completing practical training, while H-1B is the standard long-term option. TN applies specifically to Canadian and Mexican citizens whose technician role and credentials align with a qualifying USMCA occupation category.
What qualifications does AutoNation expect for Maintenance Technician positions?
AutoNation generally looks for ASE certification or equivalent technical training, hands-on experience with vehicle diagnostics and repair, and familiarity with manufacturer-specific service procedures relevant to the brands the dealership carries. Roles range from lube technicians to master-level positions, so the experience threshold varies. Candidates with formal automotive technology coursework and documented repair hours tend to move through screening faster.
How long does the visa sponsorship process typically take for a Maintenance Technician role at AutoNation?
For H-1B sponsorship, the employer must first file a certified LCA with the DOL, which typically takes seven business days, before submitting the I-129 petition to USCIS. Standard processing runs three to six months, and USCIS premium processing can reduce that to 15 business days. If you're already on F-1 OPT, you can begin work while the H-1B petition is pending under the cap-gap extension, provided you filed before OPT expired.
