You will assist with calculations, system layouts, equipment selections, drawing production, and coordination while developing a strong foundation in mission-critical design.
The Specifics of the Role
- Assist engineers in producing mechanical design deliverables including drawings and specifications.
- Perform basic calculations (load calcs, system sizing, pipe pressure drop, duct pressure drop etc.) and assist with miscellaneous design tasks under the supervision of senior staff.
- Coordinate with other disciplines including civil, structural, architectural, electrical, plumbing, and controls to support integrated design.
- Participate in construction administration tasks, including RFI responses, submittal reviews, and field observations.
- Learn and apply ICC, ASHRAE, NFPA and other relevant code series and standards.
- Develop technical skills through mentorship, project exposure, and continuing education.
Requirements
- BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET institution required.
- 0-3 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering; internship or co-op experience in mission-critical, data center, or industrial projects is a plus.
- EIT certification or ability to obtain within first year of employment required.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD and Revit; exposure to load calculations software such as Trane Trace, Carrier HAP or similar; exposure to CFD modeling software such as Ansys Fluent, Cadence Reality or similar is a plus.
- Ability to break down complex challenges and communicate clear, actionable solutions.

Obtain equipment certifications before applying
Construction mechanics at Clayco work on heavy equipment fleets used on active job sites. Certifications like OSHA 10 or manufacturer-specific credentials for diesel or hydraulic systems signal job-readiness and reduce employer hesitation around sponsoring a visa petition.
Target Clayco's self-perform project regions
Clayco self-performs a significant portion of its construction work, meaning mechanic demand is highest near active project clusters. Research their current project pipeline and apply to postings tied to regions with ongoing ground-up builds, where equipment support roles are most critical.
Clarify your visa type during the screening call
Clayco sponsors multiple visa categories including H-1B, TN, and F-1 OPT. Naming your specific status early prevents mismatches where a recruiter assumes you need H-1B cap sponsorship when TN or OPT transfers are faster and require no USCIS lottery.
Align your resume to USCIS specialty occupation framing
For H-1B petitions, USCIS must classify the mechanic role as a specialty occupation. Frame your experience around theoretical and practical application of engineering or mechanical science, not just hands-on repair tasks, to support the employer's petition narrative.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open Mechanic roles at Clayco
Clayco posts mechanic openings across multiple regions as project demand shifts. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Clayco mechanic positions flagged for visa sponsorship so you're applying to roles where the hiring team is already prepared to run a sponsorship process.
Confirm PERM timing if targeting a Green Card path
If Clayco offers EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship, the PERM labor certification process through DOL can take a year or longer before USCIS even receives the I-140 petition. Start that conversation at the offer stage, not after onboarding, to avoid gaps in your status timeline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Clayco sponsor H-1B visas for Mechanics?
Yes, Clayco sponsors H-1B visas and has a track record of filing across multiple role types including technical and trade functions. For a Mechanic role to qualify under H-1B, the position must meet USCIS specialty occupation standards, meaning it typically requires a relevant bachelor's degree or its equivalent in mechanical engineering or a related field. Confirm the role's classification with the recruiter before investing time in the process.
How do I apply for Mechanic jobs at Clayco?
Applications go through Clayco's careers portal, where mechanic postings are listed by project region and job site. You can also find Clayco mechanic openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate, which makes it easier to identify the specific postings where Clayco has indicated willingness to support work authorization. Apply directly and note your visa status clearly in your application materials.
Which visa types does Clayco commonly use for Mechanic roles?
Clayco sponsors H-1B, EB-2, EB-3, TN visa, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and J-1 visas. For mechanics, TN visa is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering or technical occupations and moves faster than H-1B since it bypasses the annual lottery. F-1 OPT is an option for recent graduates in a relevant STEM field, providing up to three years of work authorization before an H-1B petition may be needed.
What qualifications does Clayco expect for Mechanic positions?
Clayco's mechanic roles typically require hands-on experience with heavy construction equipment, diesel engines, and hydraulic systems. Formal trade training or an associate's or bachelor's degree in a mechanical or engineering discipline strengthens your application and is often required for H-1B visa eligibility. OSHA safety certifications and manufacturer-specific credentials are frequently listed as preferred qualifications in their job postings.
How do I understand the timeline for Clayco's visa sponsorship process?
The timeline depends on your visa type. TN status can be granted at a port of entry in a single day for eligible Canadian and Mexican nationals. H-1B cap petitions are filed in April with employment starting October 1 at the earliest, and premium processing with USCIS currently runs about 15 business days for an adjudication decision. EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through PERM adds a DOL labor certification phase that typically takes 12 to 18 months before USCIS filing.
