Obtain ASE Certification Before Applying
ASE-certified Mechanics stand out in Cummins' applicant pool because their manufacturing sites expect demonstrated, standardized competency. Holding certifications in diesel engines or drive trains signals you can contribute from day one, which matters when a sponsor is weighing visa filing costs.
Target Cummins Facilities in High-Demand Regions
Cummins operates manufacturing and distribution facilities across the Midwest and Southeast, where skilled Mechanic shortages are real. Applying to plant-level postings in those regions increases your odds of reaching a hiring manager who has sponsorship authority and an open headcount.
Clarify Your Visa Category Early in Interviews
H-1B sponsorship for trade roles requires your position to qualify as a specialty occupation, which is harder to establish for Mechanic titles than for engineering roles. Raise your visa status during the offer stage, not after, so the recruiter can loop in Cummins' immigration counsel before a verbal offer is extended.
Understand How TN Status Applies to Mechanics
If you're Canadian or Mexican, TN status covers certain manufacturing-adjacent professionals but does not include general Mechanic classifications. Confirm with a USCIS-recognized attorney whether your specific duties and job title at Cummins would qualify before banking on TN as your sponsorship path.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Verified Cummins Mechanic Openings
Filtering by sponsor history and role type saves significant time when you're targeting a specific employer. Migrate Mate aggregates Mechanic postings at companies with documented sponsorship activity, letting you prioritize Cummins openings where the hiring team has a track record of supporting international applicants.
Request a PERM Timeline Estimate Before Accepting an Offer
If your Mechanic role at Cummins leads toward an EB-3 Green Card, DOL's PERM labor certification process can take 12 to 18 months before the I-140 petition even begins. Ask HR what the standard timeline looks like at your specific facility so you can plan your status continuity accordingly.

Does Cummins sponsor H-1B visas for Mechanics?
Cummins does sponsor H-1B visas, but approval for a Mechanic role depends on whether the position qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards. Trades-based titles face closer scrutiny than engineering or technical roles. If your duties involve advanced diagnostics, systems integration, or engineering-level work, the case becomes stronger. An immigration attorney should review the job description before you accept an offer.
How do I apply for Mechanic jobs at Cummins?
Open Mechanic positions at Cummins are listed on the company's careers portal, where you can filter by location and job function. For job seekers who need visa sponsorship, Migrate Mate surfaces Cummins Mechanic postings alongside sponsorship history, so you can prioritize roles at facilities where international hiring has happened before. Apply directly through the official posting and flag your visa status in your cover letter or early in the screening call.
Which visa types does Cummins typically use for Mechanic roles?
Cummins has sponsored H-1B, TN, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, J-1, and EB-2/EB-3 immigrant visas across its workforce. For Mechanic roles specifically, F-1 OPT is common for recent graduates in diesel technology or mechanical programs, while EB-3 is the more typical long-term path. TN eligibility depends on whether your specific job duties and nationality align with the categories DOL recognizes.
What qualifications does Cummins expect for sponsored Mechanic positions?
Cummins generally looks for formal training in diesel mechanics, powertrain systems, or a related technical discipline, typically through a two- or four-year degree or a recognized apprenticeship. ASE certification strengthens your profile considerably. For sponsored roles, your credentials need to directly align with the position's duties because USCIS or DOL may scrutinize the degree-to-job match during the petition review.
How long does the sponsorship process take for a Cummins Mechanic role?
Timeline depends heavily on the visa category. F-1 OPT authorization through your university typically takes 90 days to process, so apply early. H-1B sponsorship follows USCIS's annual lottery cycle, with a start date no earlier than October 1 each year. EB-3 Green Card sponsorship involves DOL's PERM labor certification, which commonly runs 12 to 18 months before Cummins can file the I-140 immigrant petition.
