About Consejo Counseling and Referral Service
In 1978, Consejo was born out of a visionary work-study project directed by Dr. Gilberto Lucero, a professor at the UW School of Social Work, in which two latino master level students participated. They identified a critical need for behavioral health services within the Latino community in Seattle, Washington. At that time, there were no Latino-based behavioral health care organizations in WA State. Consejo became a pioneer in establishing the first bilingual and bicultural care organization dedicated to serve the Spanish speaking monolingual community. The mission was to improve mental health care access and break down cultural stigmas. Over four decades later, we continue to lead the way in providing culturally and linguistically competent behavioral health services to the Latinx community, empowering and transforming the lives of our clients.

Target clinical and counseling roles first
CONSEJO's sponsorship activity is concentrated in behavioral health and counseling positions. Focus your search on licensed therapist, social worker, and mental health counselor roles, these are most likely to qualify for H-1B sponsorship at a nonprofit healthcare employer.
Highlight multicultural competency in your application
CONSEJO serves diverse, multilingual communities across Washington State. Applicants who demonstrate experience working with underserved or non-English-speaking populations align strongly with CONSEJO's mission and stand out in the hiring process.
Understand how nonprofit H-1B sponsorship works
As a nonprofit, CONSEJO may have access to cap-exempt H-1B filing, meaning positions could be available outside the annual lottery window. Confirm this directly with their HR team, it can significantly affect your application timeline and odds.
Verify your credentials meet state licensure requirements
Washington State has specific requirements for licensed mental health counselors and social workers. International candidates should confirm their degree and clinical hours are recognized before applying, since licensure eligibility affects whether CONSEJO can pursue H-1B sponsorship for the role.
Apply early in CONSEJO's hiring cycles
Behavioral health nonprofits often have longer onboarding timelines due to credentialing and compliance steps. Reaching out early and expressing your sponsorship needs upfront gives CONSEJO's HR team time to assess eligibility without last-minute pressure.
