Cell R& D Engineer
Job Overview:
The Cell R&D Engineer will be responsible for developing, optimizing, and scaling next-generation high-efficiency solar cell technologies, including Heterojunction (HJT), TOPCon, Perovskite, and Tandem perovskite-silicon architectures. This role will work closely with internal teams and external research partners to translate advanced concepts into manufacturable, high-yield, and cost-effective solutions for commercial production. The engineer will lead hands-on experimentation, process design, data analysis, and pilot-line validation to drive efficiency improvements, yield enhancements, reliability optimization, and cost-effectiveness of advanced cell structures. They will also support integrating cell innovations into full module products and ensuring downstream reliability and manufacturability.
Responsibilities:
Solar Cell Research & Development
- Develop and optimize HJT, TOPCon, Perovskite, and Tandem solar cell structures for high efficiency and long-term stability.
- Conduct experiments on device structure, passivation, TCO, contacts, interfaces, and encapsulation relevant to advanced architectures.
- Analyze device physics and performance losses using tools such as Suns-Voc, EQE/IQE, J-V, and lifetime/metrology data.
Process & Manufacturing Integration
- Scale lab-level processes to pilot and production environments, working closely with process engineering.
- Evaluate process windows, equipment capability, and impacts of upstream/downstream steps.
- Support root-cause analysis and continuous improvement for yield, throughput, and reliability issues.
Module Reliability & Product Integration
- Collaborate with module R&D teams to assess how cell innovations interact with module assembly steps such as lamination, interconnection, packaging, and reliability testing.
- Interpret results from IEC reliability tests (e.g., damp heat, thermal cycling, UV, PID) to guide cell-level improvements.
- Support long-term field performance modeling and degradation assessments.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work across R&D, quality, reliability, operations, and supply chain teams to deliver manufacturable, high-performance cell technologies.
- Provide technical documentation, reports, and recommendations for material selection and process modifications.
Skill Set & Experience:
- 3–10+ years experience in solar R&D, advanced PV manufacturing, or thin-film semiconductor development.
- Expertise in TOPCon, HJT, Tandem (perovskite-si) or other high-efficiency thin-film or passivated-contact solar cell technologies.
- Strong understanding of solar cell physics: recombination, passivation, optical management, interfaces, and degradation mechanisms.
- Experience with cleanroom processes such as:
- PECVD, sputtering, ALD, thermal evaporation
- Laser processes (annealing, patterning, scribing)
- Printing, coating, or scalable thin-film deposition (slot-die, blade, spray, etc.)
- Metallization and contact formation.
- Hands-on experience with:
- JV, EQE/IQE, Suns-Voc, PL/EL imaging
- Lifetime and defect analysis (μ-PCD, QSSPC, DLTS, etc.)
- Thin-film and materials metrology (Ellipsometry, XRD, SEM/EDX, AFM).
- Familiarity with module reliability standards (IEC 61215 / 61730) and failure modes (UV degradation, moisture ingress, thermal stress, PID).
- Understanding of how cell-level materials and interfaces behave under module encapsulation.
- Ability to scale processes from lab to production.
- Strong DOE design, statistical analysis, SPC, and data-driven problem-solving skills.
- Experience working with automation, pilot tools, and high-volume manufacturing lines is a plus.
Education:
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related fields.
Benefits:
- PTO
- 401K Matching Plan
- Vision, Dental, Medical Benefits
- Sick leave

Lead with hardware-specific technical skills
ES Foundry operates in electronics and hardware, so applicants who can speak fluently about circuit design, embedded systems, or semiconductor processes stand out. Tailor your resume to reflect the technical depth that hardware roles demand before applying.
Understand which visa types ES Foundry uses
ES Foundry sponsors H-1B, TN, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT visas. Knowing which category fits your situation before you apply helps you ask the right questions in interviews and shows hiring managers you understand the sponsorship process.
Target roles with clear degree-to-job alignment
Hardware and electronics roles at ES Foundry typically require a specific technical degree to qualify for H-1B sponsorship. Make sure your degree field directly maps to the role, a mismatch is the most common reason sponsorship requests stall.
Apply early if you're on OPT or CPT
ES Foundry actively sponsors F-1 OPT and CPT candidates, making it a strong target if you're on a student visa. Engage early in your final year, OPT timelines are tight and employers who sponsor frequently plan headcount well in advance.
Use verified sponsorship data to prioritize your search
Not every electronics company sponsors visas consistently. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history, helping you focus your time on companies like ES Foundry that have an active track record.
Prepare for technical screening before immigration conversations
At hardware-focused companies like ES Foundry, visa sponsorship discussions typically come after technical interviews. Nail the engineering assessment first, sponsorship decisions follow job fit decisions, not the other way around.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ES Foundry sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, ES Foundry sponsors H-1B visas and has demonstrated a strong, consistent track record of doing so. The company operates in electronics and hardware, so sponsored roles typically sit in engineering and technical disciplines where degree-to-job alignment is straightforward. If you're targeting an H-1B, ES Foundry is one of the more reliable sponsors in its sector.
What visa types does ES Foundry sponsor?
ES Foundry sponsors H-1B, H-2B visa, TN visa, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT visas. This range makes the company accessible to candidates at multiple stages, from international students finishing degrees on OPT or CPT to experienced professionals seeking H-1B or TN visa sponsorship. The variety of visa types signals a company that actively recruits international talent across different hiring pipelines.
Which roles at ES Foundry are most likely to receive visa sponsorship?
Given ES Foundry's focus on electronics and hardware, sponsorship tends to flow toward engineering and technical roles, including positions in circuit design, embedded systems, hardware development, and related disciplines. These roles map cleanly to specialty occupation standards required for H-1B classification. Candidates with a bachelor's degree or higher in an engineering or applied science field are the strongest fit.
How do I find open jobs at ES Foundry that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most reliable way to find verified visa-sponsoring roles at companies like ES Foundry. You can filter by employer and visa type to confirm which openings actively support sponsorship, rather than guessing based on a job description that may not mention it. This saves significant time during a job search, especially if you're working against an OPT or status deadline.
How do I approach the interview process at ES Foundry as a visa sponsorship candidate?
Treat the technical interview as the priority, not the immigration conversation. ES Foundry, like most hardware companies, makes hiring decisions based on role fit first and addresses visa sponsorship once an offer is in motion. Come prepared with strong technical depth relevant to electronics or hardware, demonstrate your degree aligns with the role, and let the sponsorship process follow naturally from there.
