Align Your Degree to a Technical Specialty
GEI operates at the intersection of software and engineering consulting, so a degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field strengthens your H-1B specialty occupation case. A general IT background without a field-specific degree can complicate the petition.
Target Roles That Support Engineering Projects
Software Engineer openings at GEI often support environmental and infrastructure project delivery, not pure product development. Frame your experience around technical systems, data platforms, or tools that serve project-based consulting workflows when tailoring your application materials.
Browse Open Roles Using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Software Engineer roles at GEI Consultants by visa type, so you're only applying to positions where sponsorship aligns with your current status, whether that's F-1 OPT, TN, or H-1B transfer.
Ask About PERM Timing During the Offer Stage
GEI sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards, but PERM labor certification is employer-initiated and not automatic with an offer. Ask the recruiter directly whether the role has a defined permanent residency pathway and at what tenure point the employer typically begins the DOL PERM process.
Prepare for Prevailing Wage Requirements Early
GEI must certify to DOL that your offered salary meets the prevailing wage for the role and location before filing an LCA. Research DOL wage data for Software Engineer positions in your target GEI office location so you can negotiate a compliant offer from the start.

Does GEI Consultants sponsor H-1B visas for Software Engineers?
Yes, GEI Consultants sponsors H-1B visas for Software Engineer roles. The process requires GEI to file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL and then submit a petition to USCIS. Because H-1B cap-subject filings are limited to one lottery window per year in April, timing your job search and offer acceptance to align with that cycle is critical if you need a new H-1B rather than a transfer.
How do I apply for Software Engineer jobs at GEI Consultants?
You can browse and apply for Software Engineer roles at GEI Consultants directly through Migrate Mate, which filters listings by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm eligibility before applying. GEI posts roles across multiple office locations, so filtering by geography alongside visa type helps you identify the most relevant openings for your situation.
Which visa types does GEI Consultants commonly use for Software Engineers?
GEI sponsors several visa categories for Software Engineers, including H-1B for specialty occupation workers, F-1 OPT and CPT for students in active programs, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying technical roles, and J-1 for exchange visitors. For permanent residency, GEI has supported EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship, which goes through the DOL PERM labor certification process before USCIS adjudication.
What qualifications does GEI Consultants look for in Software Engineer candidates who need visa sponsorship?
GEI typically looks for a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related technical discipline, since this is required to establish specialty occupation status under H-1B rules. Practical experience with systems that support engineering project delivery, such as data management platforms, GIS tools, or environmental monitoring software, tends to differentiate candidates given GEI's consulting focus.
How do I know if a Software Engineer role at GEI Consultants will lead to a Green Card?
Green Card sponsorship at consulting firms like GEI is discretionary and not guaranteed with every offer. The PERM process, which is the first step for EB-2 and EB-3 pathways, is initiated by the employer, not the employee. During the offer and negotiation stage, ask the recruiter whether the specific role and location have a defined sponsorship policy and what the typical timeline looks like from hire to PERM filing.
