Align Your Degree to Specialty Occupation Standards
H-1B eligibility for Civil Engineers hinges on your degree matching the specific technical discipline GEI is hiring for. A geotechnical role backed by a geotechnical or structural engineering degree is a cleaner petition than a general civil engineering degree paired with a water resources position.
Target GEI's Office Locations Strategically
GEI operates regional offices across the U.S., and hiring demand shifts by practice area and project pipeline. Applying to offices in growth markets like the Southeast or Mountain West can improve your odds when consulting firms are actively staffing new contracts.
Get Your PE Licensure Process Started Early
GEI consulting roles frequently expect progress toward Professional Engineer licensure. Starting the FE exam process before your OPT expires signals long-term commitment to U.S. practice and makes you a stronger H-1B sponsorship candidate when the employer is weighing investment.
Prepare for a Multi-Stage Offer and Filing Timeline
H-1B sponsorship through a consulting firm like GEI typically involves an offer, LCA filing with DOL, then USCIS petition submission. If you're on OPT, confirm your STEM OPT extension is in place so your authorization bridges the gap before your H-1B takes effect.
Use Migrate Mate to Surface Active Civil Engineer Openings
GEI posts Civil Engineer roles across multiple practice areas and regions at different times. Use Migrate Mate to filter and track active openings at GEI that are open to visa sponsorship, so you're applying when positions are live and budgeted.
Clarify Sponsorship Scope Before Accepting an Offer
Consulting firms sometimes sponsor H-1B but handle Green Card sponsorship case by case. Before signing, ask HR directly whether GEI supports PERM-based EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship for Civil Engineers, so your long-term immigration path is clear from day one.

Find Civil Engineer at GEI Consultants JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does GEI Consultants sponsor H-1B visas for Civil Engineers?
Yes, GEI Consultants sponsors H-1B visas for Civil Engineer roles. As a professional services firm with licensed engineering practice areas, Civil Engineer positions typically meet USCIS specialty occupation requirements, which require a theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge and a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline. Sponsorship is generally handled through GEI's HR and legal team after an offer is extended.
Which visa types does GEI Consultants commonly use for Civil Engineers?
GEI Consultants supports several visa categories for Civil Engineers, including H-1B for skilled workers, F-1 OPT and CPT for students in their practical training period, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles, and J-1 for exchange visitors. For candidates pursuing permanent residence, GEI has sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways through the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications does GEI Consultants expect for Civil Engineer roles?
GEI typically looks for a bachelor's or master's degree in civil, geotechnical, environmental, or structural engineering from an ABET-accredited program. Relevant internship or project experience in consulting or infrastructure is valued. Progress toward the FE exam or PE licensure strengthens your profile, particularly for mid-level roles. Specialized skills in geotechnical investigation, stormwater management, or site civil work align well with GEI's core practice areas.
How do I apply for Civil Engineer jobs at GEI Consultants?
You can browse and apply for Civil Engineer positions at GEI Consultants directly through Migrate Mate, which surfaces active GEI openings that are open to visa sponsorship. Tailor your resume to the specific practice area the role falls under, whether geotechnical, environmental, or water resources, and confirm your visa status and work authorization timeline clearly in your application materials so GEI's hiring team can assess sponsorship logistics from the start.
How do I plan my timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship from GEI Consultants?
H-1B petitions are filed once per year, with USCIS opening registration in March for an October 1 start date. If you're on F-1 OPT, securing your offer by late winter gives GEI enough lead time to prepare your petition before the registration window. STEM OPT extensions provide up to 24 additional months of work authorization, which can bridge the gap if you don't get selected in the lottery on the first attempt.
