Align your resume to GM's sponsored roles
GM's Green Card filings cluster in engineering disciplines, software development, and advanced manufacturing. Review posted roles in those teams and make your resume reflect the specific technical skills and degree fields GM lists, since PERM requires your credentials to match the job description precisely.
Understand which EB pathway fits your background
EB-3 covers most professional and skilled roles at GM, while EB-2 requires a position demanding an advanced degree or exceptional ability. If your role qualifies for EB-2, it skips EB-3's longer priority date queues, which matters significantly given current backlogs for certain nationalities.
Prepare for the PERM recruitment documentation phase
Before GM can file your Green Card petition, DOL requires PERM labor certification proving no qualified U.S. worker was available for your role. You'll want to document your hiring process carefully, because any procedural gap in recruitment records can trigger an audit and delay your case by over a year.
Benchmark your salary against prevailing wage requirements
GM must pay you at least the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation and location before PERM certification. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the wage level tied to your job title and region, then confirm your offer meets or exceeds it before signing anything.
Search GM's verified Green Card filing history on Migrate Mate
Pull up General Motors on Migrate Mate to see which job titles and occupations GM has filed Green Card petitions for. That data tells you which roles inside GM actually move forward to sponsorship, so you can target your application toward teams with a track record of following through.
Raise Green Card eligibility early in the offer stage
GM's immigration process involves coordination between HR, legal, and your hiring manager. Once you receive an offer, ask directly whether the role is eligible for Green Card sponsorship and what the typical timeline looks like internally, so there's no ambiguity after you've accepted.
General Motors Green Card Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does General Motors sponsor Green Card visas?
Yes, General Motors sponsors Green Card visas, primarily through the EB-2 and EB-3 employment-based categories. Sponsorship is concentrated in technical and engineering functions, including software, propulsion, manufacturing, and research roles. GM initiates the process through PERM labor certification filed with DOL, which must be completed before USCIS can adjudicate the immigrant petition.
Which roles and departments at General Motors typically receive Green Card sponsorship?
Green Card sponsorship at GM is most common in roles requiring specialized technical degrees, such as software engineers, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and research scientists. Advanced manufacturing and autonomy-related functions also see regular filings. Roles classified at higher EB-2 levels tend to be in product development and R&D, while EB-3 covers a broader range of professional positions.
How do I start the Green Card process at General Motors?
The process begins when GM's immigration team initiates a PERM labor certification with DOL on your behalf. GM must advertise your position and demonstrate that no qualified U.S. worker is available. Once PERM is certified, GM files an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS. You should confirm sponsorship intent with HR before or during the offer stage to avoid delays.
How long does the Green Card process typically take at General Motors?
The PERM stage alone can take six to eighteen months depending on DOL processing and whether an audit is triggered. After PERM, USCIS adjudicates the I-140 petition, which can add several more months. For EB-3 applicants from countries with visa backlogs, the wait for an available priority date can extend the total timeline by years beyond the initial filings.
How do I find open Green Card jobs at General Motors?
Search for General Motors on Migrate Mate to see current job listings filtered for Green Card sponsorship eligibility alongside GM's verified DOL filing history by occupation. Cross-reference the job titles you find against GM's historic petition data to identify which functions consistently sponsor, then apply directly through GM's careers site for roles that match your background and target department.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card sponsorship at General Motors?
Employers sponsoring a Green Card through the PERM labor certification process must pay at least the prevailing wage for the role. The Department of Labor determines this rate based on the specific job title, location, and experience level. The prevailing wage is locked in during the PERM filing and applies through the entire Green Card process. You can look up current rates using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
