Target clinical and research roles first
Jefferson's H-1B filings concentrate in specialty occupation roles like physicians, nurses, clinical researchers, and biomedical scientists. Focus your application on departments with documented international hiring history rather than general administrative or support positions that rarely trigger sponsorship.
Align your credentials with U.S. equivalency standards
Foreign healthcare degrees require evaluation by a USCIS-recognized credential assessment body before Jefferson's HR team can confirm specialty occupation eligibility. Get your transcript evaluated early, since credential review delays are one of the most common reasons H-1B timelines slip at large health systems.
Verify your role qualifies as a specialty occupation
Use O*NET to confirm your target job title requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. Jefferson's legal team will rely on this classification when filing your H-1B petition, so arriving at the offer stage with this research done strengthens your case and speeds up internal approval.
Negotiate the offer before the April filing window
USCIS opens H-1B registration each March for an April 1 filing start. Jefferson's HR and legal teams need several weeks to prepare your petition. Secure your written offer and complete all onboarding paperwork well before March so your case isn't rushed or missed entirely.
Confirm Jefferson's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
As a large healthcare employer, Jefferson is enrolled in E-Verify, which is required for STEM OPT extensions and certain H-1B transitions. Confirm this status with HR before you accept an offer if you're currently on OPT, since E-Verify enrollment affects your authorization timeline directly.
Use Migrate Mate to track Jefferson's LCA filing history
Before your interview, pull Jefferson's Labor Condition Application data through Migrate Mate to see which job titles and departments have active or recent filings. This tells you which teams are actively sponsoring and helps you target your application where H-1B approval is already an established practice.
Thomas Jefferson University & Jefferson Health H-1B Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Thomas Jefferson University & Jefferson Health sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Thomas Jefferson University & Jefferson Health sponsors H-1B visas, primarily for roles in clinical medicine, academic research, nursing, and allied health. Sponsorship decisions are made at the departmental and HR level, so your best approach is to confirm sponsorship willingness directly during the offer negotiation stage rather than assuming it applies universally across all open positions.
Which departments at Jefferson typically sponsor H-1B visas?
H-1B sponsorship at Jefferson is most common in departments with high demand for specialty occupation roles: clinical research, hospital medicine, graduate medical education, behavioral health, and biomedical sciences. Administrative and support roles outside these areas are less likely to trigger sponsorship. Checking recent Labor Condition Application filings through Migrate Mate gives you a clearer picture of which teams are actively hiring internationally.
How does the H-1B application process work at Jefferson?
Once you have a written offer, Jefferson's HR team coordinates with immigration counsel to prepare your H-1B petition. This includes completing the Labor Condition Application with DOL, confirming the prevailing wage using the OFLC Wage Search, and filing Form I-129 with USCIS. The employer bears the filing costs for required fees. Your role is to provide complete documentation promptly so the timeline isn't delayed.
How long does H-1B processing take at Jefferson?
Standard H-1B processing through USCIS currently takes several months after the April 1 filing date, with an October 1 start date for cap-subject cases. Jefferson may use premium processing for time-sensitive hires, which reduces the USCIS adjudication window to 15 business days. Cap-exempt positions at Jefferson's academic and nonprofit affiliates can be filed year-round without the lottery, which shortens the overall timeline significantly.
How do I strengthen my H-1B application for a role at Jefferson?
Arrive at the offer stage with your foreign credential evaluation completed, your job title verified against O*NET specialty occupation standards, and a clear understanding of how your degree aligns with the specific role. USCIS scrutinizes healthcare petitions carefully, so any gap between your degree field and the job description creates risk. Migrate Mate can help you review Jefferson's historical LCA filings so you target roles where sponsorship is already established practice.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at Thomas Jefferson University & Jefferson Health?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
