Align Your Credentials to Specialty Occupation Standards
Community college Teaching roles must qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B eligibility. Confirm your degree directly matches the subject area you'll teach, not just a related field. A marketing degree supporting a business administration course is a stronger fit than a general humanities degree.
Target Departments with Persistent Hiring Needs
Ivy Tech consistently posts openings in healthcare, information technology, and skilled trades instruction. Focusing your application on high-demand technical programs increases your odds of reaching a hiring manager who already understands the sponsorship process rather than one encountering it for the first time.
Browse Open Teaching Roles Through Migrate Mate
Searching for visa-friendly Teaching positions at community colleges is faster when you filter by sponsorship history. Use Migrate Mate to identify current Ivy Tech openings where sponsorship is a realistic outcome, rather than applying broadly and discovering eligibility issues after an offer.
Prepare Your Credential Equivalency Documentation Early
Ivy Tech Teaching roles often require credentials reviewed against U.S. standards. If your degree is from outside the United States, get a foreign credential evaluation from a NACES-approved service before you apply. Delays in evaluation can push an I-129 filing past the October 1 cap deadline.
Clarify Sponsorship During the Offer Stage Not After
Community colleges sometimes extend offers without immediately confirming immigration support. Ask HR directly whether the position is approved for H-1B or TN sponsorship before accepting. USCIS requires the employer to file the I-129 petition, so verbal intent is not enough.
Understand How J-1 and TN Fit Teaching Roles
If you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship, TN status covers professors and teachers without a lottery or annual cap. For visiting faculty or exchange-based roles, Ivy Tech may use J-1. Both options can move faster than H-1B, depending on your role structure and citizenship.

Find Teaching at Ivy Tech Community College JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Ivy Tech Community College sponsor H-1B visas for Teaching roles?
Yes, Ivy Tech Community College sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Teaching positions. The role must meet USCIS specialty occupation requirements, meaning your degree should directly correspond to the subject you'll teach. Ivy Tech's HR and legal teams handle the I-129 filing, but you'll need to align your credentials and start the process well ahead of the October 1 start date.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at Ivy Tech Community College?
Applications go through Ivy Tech's official careers portal, where positions are listed by campus and discipline. You can also find current Teaching openings with confirmed sponsorship history on Migrate Mate, which lets you filter specifically for roles where visa support is a realistic outcome. Tailor your application to the specific program area, since Ivy Tech hires at the department level and subject-matter fit matters.
Which visa types are commonly used for Teaching roles at Ivy Tech Community College?
Ivy Tech sponsors H-1B visas for full-time Teaching faculty where the role qualifies as a specialty occupation. TN status is an option for Canadian and Mexican citizens teaching in eligible categories like professor or scientific technician. J-1 exchange visitor visas are used for visiting or adjunct faculty in certain programs. F-1 OPT and CPT can cover short-term or part-time teaching during a degree program, though full-time sponsorship typically requires H-1B or TN.
What qualifications does Ivy Tech Community College expect for Teaching positions?
Requirements vary by program. For academic subjects, a master's degree in the relevant discipline is the standard minimum. Technical and workforce programs often prioritize industry certifications and hands-on experience alongside or instead of a graduate degree. For H-1B eligibility specifically, your degree must correspond directly to the teaching discipline, so a general degree in an unrelated field won't satisfy USCIS specialty occupation criteria even if Ivy Tech extends an offer.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Teaching role at Ivy Tech?
For H-1B sponsorship, Ivy Tech must file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before submitting the I-129 petition to USCIS. Standard processing runs three to six months. H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed in April for an October 1 start, so offers need to be in place by late winter. TN status for Canadian citizens can be obtained at the border in a single day, making it significantly faster when the role qualifies.
