Align your resume to project-based engineering
Michael Baker recruits interns for client-facing infrastructure and technology projects. Highlight coursework or personal projects involving GIS, transportation systems, or data pipelines, these map directly to their consulting engagements and make your application immediately relevant.
Secure CPT authorization before your start date
For summer internships, employers like Michael Baker typically need your CPT authorization letter before they can confirm your start. Work with your DSO early, CPT approval can take two to four weeks at some universities, and delays cost you the offer.
Ask about OPT transition timelines during interviews
If you want to convert an internship into a full-time role, ask how the team handles OPT-to-H-1B transitions. Consulting firms structure project staffing around headcount timelines, so knowing their internal process early helps you plan your USCIS filing window.
Target offices with active federal or DOT contracts
Michael Baker's federal and transportation-facing offices tend to have the most active intern hiring. DOL LCA filings show consistent sponsorship activity in those practice areas, so prioritizing those office locations improves your chances of finding a role with a clear sponsorship pathway.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open roles by sponsorship type
Not every intern posting at Michael Baker lists visa sponsorship explicitly. Use Migrate Mate to browse Software Engineer Intern openings filtered by visa category so you can focus your applications on roles where your authorization type is already confirmed as supported.
Confirm H-1B cap-subject eligibility before accepting a return offer
If Michael Baker extends a full-time return offer, confirm with their HR team whether the H-1B petition will be cap-subject or cap-exempt. Consulting firms occasionally place staff at qualifying nonprofit or research facilities, which changes your USCIS registration requirements entirely.

Find Software Engineer Intern at Michael Baker International JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Michael Baker International sponsor H-1B visas for Software Engineer Interns?
Michael Baker International sponsors H-1B visas, though sponsorship at the intern stage typically applies to candidates converting to full-time roles after graduation. Intern positions are most commonly supported through F-1 CPT or OPT. If you're targeting a return offer, raise the H-1B sponsorship question directly with the recruiter during the interview process so you understand the timeline before accepting.
Which visa types are commonly used for Software Engineer Intern roles at Michael Baker International?
F-1 CPT is the most common authorization for students interning during their degree program. F-1 OPT covers post-graduation internships. For international candidates already in the workforce, TN status applies to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles. Michael Baker also supports J-1 intern and trainee programs, and longer-term positions can lead to H-1B, EB-2, or EB-3 sponsorship.
How do I apply for Software Engineer Intern jobs at Michael Baker International?
Applications go through Michael Baker's careers portal, where intern postings are listed by practice area and location. Migrate Mate is a reliable way to surface active Software Engineer Intern openings at Michael Baker filtered by visa sponsorship type, which saves time compared to manually checking the company site. Tailor your application to the specific engineering practice area the role sits in.
What qualifications and experience are expected for Software Engineer Intern roles at Michael Baker International?
Most Software Engineer Intern roles require enrollment in a computer science, software engineering, or related degree program. Michael Baker's consulting context means they value candidates with exposure to geospatial tools, transportation systems, or infrastructure data platforms. Familiarity with Python, SQL, or GIS software like ArcGIS is frequently referenced in postings. Strong written communication skills matter more here than at product companies because deliverables often go directly to government clients.
How do I manage the timeline between my internship end date and my next visa status?
If your internship is on CPT, your authorization ends with the program end date listed on your CPT letter. For OPT, you have a 60-day grace period after your employment end date before your F-1 status terminates. Plan your USCIS or DSO interactions at least six to eight weeks before your internship ends to avoid gaps. If Michael Baker is offering you a full-time role, confirm whether they intend to file your H-1B in the next April registration window.
