- In 6 months, you'll have contributed to a large project
- In 12 months, you'll have designed new features, led development work, and become a go-to expert on parts of the system

Align your stack with MongoDB's core systems
MongoDB's Backend Engineer roles consistently require experience with distributed systems, C++, Go, or Python, and database internals. Frame your resume around these explicitly before applying, since generic backend experience won't stand out against candidates with systems programming depth.
Time your OPT application around MongoDB's hiring cycle
If you're on F-1 OPT, USCIS recommends filing at least 90 days before your program end date. MongoDB's engineering hiring ramps in Q1 and Q3, so aligning your OPT activation window with those cycles gives you the strongest path to a seamless transition.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Backend Engineer roles by visa type
Finding MongoDB postings that explicitly support your visa status takes time across general job boards. Migrate Mate lets you filter Backend Engineer openings by sponsored visa type so you can focus applications where your immigration situation is already a fit.
Prepare documentation before MongoDB extends an offer
Have your degree transcripts evaluated for U.S. equivalency before you reach the offer stage. MongoDB's immigration counsel will need these quickly once the H-1B or E-3 petition process starts, and delays in credential verification are a common reason timelines slip.

Find Backend Engineer at MongoDB JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does MongoDB sponsor H-1B visas for Backend Engineers?
Yes, MongoDB sponsors H-1B visas for Backend Engineer roles. The company works with immigration counsel to file H-1B petitions, which requires a certified Labor Condition Application from the DOL before USCIS can process the petition. Because H-1B is subject to the annual cap and lottery, timing your application and securing an offer before the March registration window is critical.
How do I apply for Backend Engineer jobs at MongoDB?
Applications go through MongoDB's careers site, where Backend Engineer roles are listed by team and location. Each listing specifies required skills, typically distributed systems, database internals, or developer tooling experience. You can also browse MongoDB's Backend Engineer openings filtered by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate, which surfaces only roles where your visa status is supported.
Which visa types does MongoDB commonly sponsor for Backend Engineer roles?
MongoDB sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, EB-2, EB-3, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT for Backend Engineer positions. E-3 is available to Australian citizens and offers a simpler filing process than H-1B. TN covers Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying roles. For longer-term paths, MongoDB supports employment-based Green Card sponsorship through PERM-based EB-2 and EB-3 categories.
What qualifications does MongoDB expect for Backend Engineer roles?
MongoDB's Backend Engineer postings typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field, which aligns with USCIS specialty occupation requirements for H-1B petitions. Practically, strong candidates bring hands-on experience with distributed systems, C++, Go, or Python, and familiarity with database architecture. Roles at senior levels often expect prior experience with large-scale production systems.
How do I handle the timeline between a MongoDB offer and visa filing?
Once MongoDB extends an offer, their immigration team typically initiates the LCA filing with the DOL first, which takes around seven business days under standard processing. H-1B petitions then go to USCIS, with standard processing running several months. E-3 and TN can move faster since they're processed at consulates or ports of entry. Having your credential documents ready before the offer stage avoids delays in the filing window.
