Focus on technical and engineering roles
Norfolk Southern's sponsorship activity tends to concentrate in engineering, IT, and operations functions. Targeting roles like software engineer, systems analyst, or civil engineer gives you the strongest alignment with the company's documented visa sponsorship history in Transportation & Logistics.
Understand the railroad industry's hiring cycle
Norfolk Southern typically recruits on a project and operational cycle tied to infrastructure and technology initiatives. Applying in Q1 and Q4, when capital planning is active, can improve your chances of landing in a hiring window that supports H-1B or OPT sponsorship.
Highlight domain knowledge in logistics or rail systems
Candidates with coursework or experience in supply chain, transportation systems, or civil infrastructure stand out at Norfolk Southern. Framing your background around freight rail operations or network optimization signals direct value to a company with complex, specialized hiring needs.
Verify sponsorship history before applying
Not every role at Norfolk Southern will include sponsorship, confirm the position's eligibility before investing time in the application. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history and avoid wasting effort on roles that don't support visa candidates.
Use OPT or CPT as an entry point
Norfolk Southern sponsors F-1 OPT and CPT, which means internships and post-graduation placements can serve as a pipeline into full-time H-1B sponsorship. Securing a co-op or OPT role first is a practical way to build internal support before the formal petition process.
Prepare for a structured, corporate hiring process
As a large publicly traded railroad, Norfolk Southern runs a formal, multi-stage interview process. Expect technical assessments and behavioral rounds. Research the company's infrastructure projects and technology modernization initiatives so you can speak directly to where your skills fit their operational priorities.
