Verify your credentials meet licensure requirements
Indiana requires licensure for certain construction roles, including general contractors. Before applying, confirm that your foreign credentials or trade certifications are recognized by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency so Purdue's HR team doesn't flag eligibility gaps.
Target Purdue's Facilities and Construction department directly
Purdue's construction hiring is concentrated in its Physical Facilities division. Search for postings under that department specifically, not just general job boards, because roles there are more likely to carry sponsorship support than ad-hoc campus-level positions.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open Construction roles
Filter Purdue University's Construction openings by visa type on Migrate Mate to surface only roles where sponsorship has been offered before, saving you from applying to positions where international candidates are routinely screened out.
Align your application timeline with the H-1B cap
If you need a new H-1B, USCIS opens registration in March for an October 1 start date. Factor that gap into your conversations with Purdue recruiters early so both sides understand the realistic employment start window before an offer is extended.
Clarify specialty occupation status for your specific role
Construction project management roles at universities typically qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS standards, but field-level trades roles are harder to support under H-1B. Confirm with Purdue's international office which job classifications they've successfully sponsored before accepting any offer.
Prepare a PERM-ready employment history file
For Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3, Purdue's attorneys will need detailed records of your prior employment, foreign degrees, and any equivalency evaluations. Having a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization ready speeds up the DOL PERM audit process significantly.

Find Construction at Purdue University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Purdue University sponsor H-1B visas for Construction roles?
Yes, Purdue University sponsors H-1B visas for Construction roles, particularly project management, engineering, and planning positions that qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS guidelines. Hands-on trades roles are less commonly sponsored under H-1B because they may not meet the degree-requirement threshold USCIS applies to specialty occupation determinations.
How do I apply for Construction jobs at Purdue University?
Applications go through Purdue's official careers portal at careers.purdue.edu. Search under the Facilities and Construction category for the most relevant openings. Tailor your resume to reflect project scope, budget oversight, and any campus or institutional construction experience, since Purdue evaluates candidates against higher education construction standards, not just private sector ones.
Which visa types are commonly used for Construction roles at Purdue University?
H-1B is the most common pathway for professional Construction roles such as project managers and construction engineers. TN visas are available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering classifications. F-1 OPT and CPT apply to recent graduates in construction management or civil engineering programs before transitioning to employer-sponsored status. EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways are available for longer-term sponsorship through PERM labor certification.
What qualifications does Purdue University expect for Construction positions?
Professional roles typically require a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field, plus relevant project experience in institutional or commercial construction. Purdue values familiarity with public procurement processes and campus-scale infrastructure projects. Trades-adjacent supervisory roles may accept equivalent experience in lieu of a degree, but a formal credential strengthens your H-1B eligibility considerably.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Purdue Construction hire?
For H-1B sponsorship, expect at least six to eight months from offer to work authorization if you're subject to the annual cap, since USCIS registration opens in March for an October 1 start. Cap-exempt situations can move faster. PERM-based Green Card cases typically take two or more years. Browse current sponsored Construction openings at Purdue University on Migrate Mate to find roles where the employer has an active sponsorship history.
