Get your credentials evaluated before applying
Texas requires foreign-trained teachers to have their degrees evaluated for U.S. equivalency through a NACES-approved agency. Submit this to the Texas Education Agency before your application, so SAISD's HR team can assess your qualifications without delays.
Target bilingual and special education vacancies first
SAISD consistently faces shortages in bilingual education and special education roles. These positions are harder to fill domestically, which makes districts more willing to initiate visa sponsorship for international candidates who hold the relevant certifications.
Obtain your Texas teaching certification early
SAISD requires state certification for most classroom roles. Start the Texas Education Agency certification process before you receive an offer, because USCIS processing for an H-1B or TN won't begin until your employer has confirmed your qualifications meet state licensure requirements.
Clarify sponsorship intent during the offer stage
School districts often handle visa sponsorship through their HR or legal department rather than recruiting. Ask directly during your offer conversation whether SAISD will file the Labor Condition Application with DOL and cover the associated filing fees before you sign.
Align your start date with the academic calendar
SAISD hires on a school-year cycle, with most positions starting in August. If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your OPT end date gives you enough runway to start work legally, or ask HR whether a cap-gap extension covers the period until your H-1B takes effect on October 1.
Browse open Teaching roles using Migrate Mate
Search SAISD's active Teaching openings on Migrate Mate, which filters by visa sponsorship history so you can identify which roles are realistic targets before investing time in the application and certification process.

Find Teaching at San Antonio Independent School District JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does San Antonio Independent School District sponsor H-1B visas for Teachers?
Yes, SAISD has sponsored H-1B visas for teaching roles. As a public school district, SAISD qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, meaning it can file H-1B petitions with USCIS outside the annual lottery. This is a significant advantage because cap-exempt filings can be submitted at any time of year and approved for an October 1 start or earlier in some cases.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at San Antonio Independent School District?
Open positions are listed on SAISD's official careers portal. You'll need a completed application, proof of Texas teaching certification or active certification candidacy, and credential evaluation documents if your degree is from outside the U.S. After a conditional offer, HR initiates the sponsorship process. You can browse current SAISD teaching openings filtered by visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate before applying.
Which visa types does SAISD commonly use for Teaching roles?
SAISD has sponsored H-1B visas for teachers, which is the most common pathway for full-time roles. F-1 OPT and CPT are used for student teachers completing practicums, and TN status is available to Canadian and Mexican citizens in qualifying teaching specialties. The H-1B is the strongest long-term option because SAISD's cap-exempt status removes the lottery requirement.
What qualifications does SAISD expect for sponsored Teaching positions?
SAISD requires a bachelor's degree in education or a subject-specific field, active Texas teaching certification, and demonstrated classroom experience for most roles. For H-1B eligibility, the position must qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Bilingual endorsements and special education certifications strengthen your candidacy for the roles most likely to receive sponsorship support.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Teaching role at SAISD?
Timeline depends on visa type. For H-1B, USCIS standard processing takes three to six months after the Labor Condition Application is certified by DOL, which itself takes seven to ten business days. TN status for Canadians can be granted at the border on the same day. Plan well ahead of your intended August start date, as school-year hiring timelines are fixed and leave little room for processing delays.
