Credential your degree for U.S. equivalency
UT Austin's hiring committees expect degrees that meet U.S. standards. If your doctorate or master's was earned outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-recognized agency before you apply so your qualifications are never questioned.
Target departments with active hiring cycles
UT Austin posts Teaching roles through its central HR portal and individual department sites on different timelines. Engineering, natural sciences, and business departments tend to run searches in the fall. Check both channels so you don't miss a posting.
Ask about the LCA before signing your offer
UT Austin must file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before your H-1B petition goes to USCIS. Confirm with the international office that the LCA is in process early, because delays there push back your entire start date.
Clarify which visa the department intends to file
UT Austin sponsors multiple visa types for Teaching roles, including H-1B, E-3, and TN. Which one applies to you depends on your citizenship. Confirm the intended classification before your offer letter is finalized so there are no surprises during the petition process.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active Teaching openings
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employer sponsorship history and visa type, letting you identify current Teaching openings at UT Austin that are open to international candidates rather than sorting through listings with no sponsorship context.
Plan around the USCIS cap-exempt status of universities
UT Austin qualifies as a cap-exempt institution of higher education, so H-1B petitions filed on your behalf are not subject to the annual lottery. This means you can start in any month of the year without waiting for an April filing window.

Does The University of Texas at Austin sponsor H-1B visas for Teachings?
Yes. UT Austin sponsors H-1B visas for Teaching roles and, as a public university, qualifies as a cap-exempt employer under USCIS rules. That means your petition is not entered into the annual lottery and can be filed at any point in the year, giving you significantly more scheduling flexibility than a private-sector employer would.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at The University of Texas at Austin?
Applications go through UT Austin's Workday-based HR portal at utexas.edu. Individual departments also post openings on their own sites, particularly for faculty and lecturer searches. You'll typically submit a CV, cover letter, teaching statement, and references. Migrate Mate lets you browse open Teaching positions at UT Austin filtered by visa sponsorship type so you can apply directly to relevant roles.
Which visa types does The University of Texas at Austin commonly use for Teaching roles?
UT Austin sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, and F-1 OPT and CPT for Teaching positions, depending on your citizenship and current status. Australian citizens are often processed on the E-3, which carries lower costs and no lottery. Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying Teaching occupations may use TN status. The university's international office advises on the right classification for your situation.
What qualifications does UT Austin expect for Teaching positions?
Most Teaching roles at UT Austin require at minimum a master's degree in a relevant field, with a doctorate expected for tenure-track and many lecturer positions. Practical research experience, a publication record, and prior classroom or lab instruction strengthen your candidacy significantly. For specialty occupation visa purposes, the position must require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field directly related to the duties.
How do I understand the visa sponsorship timeline for a Teaching role at UT Austin?
Once you have an offer, UT Austin's international office handles the petition process. For H-1B and E-3 filings, the DOL Labor Condition Application typically takes around seven business days under normal processing. USCIS then adjudicates the I-129 petition, which can run from a few weeks to several months depending on whether premium processing is used. Build at least three to four months into your start date planning.
