About Scale
At Scale AI, our mission is to accelerate the development of AI applications. For 8 years, Scale has been the leading AI data foundry, helping fuel the most exciting advancements in AI, including: generative AI, defense applications, and autonomous vehicles. With our recent Series F round, we’re accelerating the abundance of frontier data to pave the road to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), and building upon our prior model evaluation work with enterprise customers and governments, to deepen our capabilities and offerings for both public and private evaluations.
About The ACE Team
The Agent Capabilities & Environments (ACE) team, part of Scale’s Research organization, brings together customer-facing Researchers and Applied AI Engineers. Our core mission includes research on agent environments and RL reward signals, benchmarking autonomous agent performance across real-world scenarios and environments, creating robust data programs to improve Large Language Models (LLMs) agentic capabilities and building foundational tools and frameworks for evaluating models as agents. ACE focuses on autonomous agents that dynamically interact with diverse external environments, including code repositories, GUI interfaces, browsers, and more.
About This Role
This role is at the intersection of cutting-edge AI research and practical application, with a focus on studying the data types essential for building state-of-the-art agents, such as browser and SWE agents. The ideal candidate will explore the data landscape needed to advance intelligent, adaptable AI agents, guiding the data strategy at Scale to drive innovation. This position requires not only expertise in LLM agents and planning algorithms but also creativity in addressing novel challenges related to data, interaction, and evaluation. You will contribute to impactful research publications on agents, collaborate with customer researchers, and work alongside the engineering team to translate these advancements into real-world, scalable solutions.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Practical experience working with LLMs, with proficiency in frameworks like Pytorch, Jax, or Tensorflow. You should also be adept at interpreting research literature and quickly turning new ideas into prototypes.
- A track record of published research in top ML venues (e.g., ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, COLM, etc.)
- At least three years of experience addressing sophisticated ML problems, either in a research setting or product development.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to operate cross-functionally.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Hands-on experience with open source LLM fine-tuning or involvement in bespoke LLM fine-tuning projects using Pytorch/Jax.
- Hands-on experience and publications in building applications and evaluations related to AI agents such as tool-use, text2SQL, browser agents, coding agents and GUI agents.
- Hands-on experience with agent frameworks such as OpenHands, Swarm, LangGraph, etc.
- Familiarity with agentic reasoning methods such as STaR and PLANSEARCH
- Experience working with cloud technology stack (eg. AWS or GCP) and developing machine learning models in a cloud environment.
Our research interviews are crafted to assess candidates' skills in practical ML prototyping and debugging, their grasp of research concepts, and their alignment with our organizational culture. We will not ask any LeetCode-style questions.

Align your research portfolio to Scale's domain
Scale AI's ML Research hiring centers on data quality, RLHF, and model evaluation. Tailor your portfolio to show work in these areas specifically. Generic deep learning projects won't differentiate you against a competitive applicant pool.
Surface your sponsorship needs early in recruiter conversations
Scale's recruiting team handles visa questions routinely for ML Research roles. Raising your sponsorship needs after an offer creates delays. Confirming compatibility in the first conversation keeps the process clean for both sides.
Understand the LCA requirement before your offer letter
Your employer must file a certified Labor Condition Application with the DOL before USCIS can adjudicate your H-1B petition. Ask Scale's HR team when they plan to initiate the LCA so you can build an accurate start-date timeline.
Target roles that map to a specialty occupation definition
H-1B approval hinges on USCIS accepting the role as a specialty occupation requiring a relevant bachelor's degree or higher. ML Research positions at Scale, which typically require a degree in computer science, statistics, or a related field, map cleanly to this standard.
Use Migrate Mate to find open ML Research roles at Scale AI
Filtering by visa type and employer manually is slow and incomplete. Use Migrate Mate to search Scale AI's sponsored ML Research openings by visa category so you're applying to positions that match your specific authorization.

Find Machine Learning Research at Scale AI JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Scale AI sponsor H-1B visas for Machine Learning Researchs?
Yes, Scale AI sponsors H-1B visas for Machine Learning Research roles. The company files both cap-subject petitions, which require selection in the annual USCIS lottery, and cap-exempt petitions where applicable. If you're already in H-1B status with another employer, a transfer to Scale AI doesn't require a new lottery selection, which significantly simplifies the process.
How do I apply for Machine Learning Research jobs at Scale AI?
You can find open Machine Learning Research positions directly on Scale AI's careers page or through Migrate Mate, which filters Scale AI's roles by visa sponsorship type. When applying, tailor your resume and any research portfolio to reflect experience in areas Scale prioritizes, such as model evaluation, RLHF, and data annotation systems. Be ready to discuss your visa status during the initial recruiter screen.
Which visa types does Scale AI commonly sponsor for Machine Learning Research roles?
Scale AI sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, J-1, and employment-based Green Card categories including EB-2 and EB-3 for Machine Learning Research positions. E-3 is available exclusively to Australian citizens and is a strong option given it carries no lottery. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying occupations.
What qualifications does Scale AI typically expect for Machine Learning Research roles?
Most ML Research positions at Scale AI require a graduate degree in computer science, statistics, machine learning, or a closely related field. Practical experience with large language models, reinforcement learning from human feedback, or data quality evaluation pipelines is valued. Research publications or demonstrated contributions to open-source projects in these areas strengthen applications, particularly for senior-level roles.
How do I time my application if I'm on F-1 OPT and targeting Scale AI?
If you're on F-1 OPT STEM extension, you have up to 24 additional months of work authorization beyond your initial OPT period, giving you time to go through Scale AI's hiring process and H-1B cap cycle. USCIS opens H-1B registration in March for an October 1 start date. Aim to have an offer finalized by February to give your employer enough lead time to file.
