Align Your Credentials Before Applying
Healthcare roles at Sentara require state licensure before a visa petition can move forward. Confirm your nursing, pharmacy, or therapy credentials are eligible for Virginia endorsement early, since USCIS processing cannot begin until your license is in hand.
Target Roles With Specialty Occupation Clarity
Positions like registered nurse, pharmacist, and physical therapist map cleanly to H-1B specialty occupation requirements. Roles with broader job descriptions, such as care coordinator, can face additional USCIS scrutiny, so prioritize openings where a specific degree field is explicitly required.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Sentara Openings
Search Sentara Health's Healthcare listings on Migrate Mate to surface roles that align with your visa type. Filtering by sponsorship history helps you focus applications on departments that have moved candidates through the process before.
Clarify Sponsorship Scope During Interviews
Sentara's recruiting and HR teams handle sponsorship decisions differently across service lines. Ask directly whether the specific department budget covers H-1B filing fees and whether they use premium processing, since timelines vary significantly between a two-week and a six-month approval window.
Verify Your J-1 Waiver Status Before Accepting an Offer
J-1 physicians and healthcare fellows completing training face a two-year home residency requirement. If you're in this category, confirm with DOL or USCIS that a Conrad 30 waiver or interested government agency waiver is in motion before Sentara initiates an H-1B petition on your behalf.

Does Sentara Health sponsor H-1B visas for Healthcares?
Yes, Sentara Health sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Healthcare roles. Positions that meet the specialty occupation standard, meaning they require a specific bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field, are the strongest candidates. Clinical roles such as pharmacist, physical therapist, and registered nurse typically satisfy that threshold, though each petition is evaluated individually by USCIS.
How do I apply for Healthcare jobs at Sentara Health?
Applications go through Sentara's careers portal, where Healthcare openings are listed by department and location across Virginia and North Carolina. Before applying, confirm the role aligns with your current visa status or sponsorship eligibility. Migrate Mate aggregates Sentara's Healthcare listings in one place, so you can filter by role type and quickly identify positions that match your background and visa situation.
Which visa types does Sentara Health commonly use for Healthcare roles?
Sentara sponsors H-1B visas for roles meeting specialty occupation criteria, and also works with F-1 OPT and CPT candidates in clinical or allied health fields completing degree programs. TN visas are an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals in eligible Healthcare occupations listed under USMCA. J-1 is used for certain training and exchange programs, though the two-year home residency requirement can complicate a transition to long-term employment.
What qualifications does Sentara Health expect for Healthcare roles?
Clinical roles generally require a relevant degree, active state licensure in Virginia or the applicable state, and often prior acute care or specialty experience. Allied health positions, including imaging, rehabilitation, and pharmacy, have their own licensure and certification requirements set at the state level. For visa purposes, the degree field must directly correspond to the job duties, so a general science degree may not satisfy USCIS requirements for a specialized clinical role.
How long does the sponsorship process take for a Healthcare role at Sentara?
From offer acceptance to H-1B approval, the timeline depends on whether Sentara uses premium processing, which USCIS adjudicates within 15 business days, or standard processing, which can take several months. State licensure must be secured before the petition is filed, which can add weeks depending on your home country credentials and Virginia's endorsement process. Cap-subject petitions are only available with an October 1 start date, so timing your offer relative to the April registration window matters.
