Target Units With Chronic Staffing Pressure
Sentara's critical care, perioperative, and med-surg units see the most consistent hiring activity. Applying directly to these departments, rather than submitting a general nursing application, puts you in front of hiring managers with active sponsorship need.
Understand TN Eligibility Before Applying
Canadian and Mexican nurses qualify for TN status, which has no annual cap and can be processed at a port of entry. Confirm your nursing degree meets the TN educational requirements with USCIS guidelines before listing TN as your preferred pathway in applications.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Active Nursing Openings
Sentara posts nursing roles across multiple systems and locations, making it easy to miss relevant openings. Use Migrate Mate to filter Sentara Health nursing jobs by visa sponsorship type so you're applying to roles where sponsorship is already part of the hiring plan.
Secure a VisaScreen Certificate Before Your Interview
Foreign-educated nurses must obtain a VisaScreen certificate from CGFNS before a visa can be issued. Starting this credential evaluation process early signals readiness to Sentara's hiring team and prevents it from becoming a bottleneck after an offer is extended.

Find Nursing at Sentara Health JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Sentara Health sponsor H-1B visas for Nurses?
Yes, Sentara Health sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Nursing roles. Registered Nursing positions generally meet the specialty occupation standard when a Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required for the role. Your employer initiates the H-1B petition through USCIS after obtaining a certified Labor Condition Application from DOL, so confirm the sponsorship commitment in writing before resigning from any current position.
How do I apply for Nursing jobs at Sentara Health?
Apply through Sentara's careers portal, filtering by nursing specialty and location. When you reach the sponsorship question in the application, answer accurately, as mismatches here can disqualify you before a recruiter review. You can also browse Sentara's open nursing roles filtered by visa type on Migrate Mate, which surfaces only positions where sponsorship has been part of the hiring pattern.
Which visa types does Sentara Health commonly use for Nursing roles?
Sentara sponsors H-1B visas for nurses who meet specialty occupation requirements, and supports F-1 OPT and CPT for students in clinical or transitional roles. TN status is available to Canadian and Mexican nurses in qualifying degree categories. J-1 exchange visitor status may also be used for certain clinical or exchange programs. The right pathway depends on your nationality, degree, and current immigration status.
What qualifications does Sentara Health expect for sponsored Nursing positions?
Sentara generally requires an active RN license in the relevant state, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing for H-1B-sponsored roles, and demonstrated clinical experience in the specialty you're applying to. Foreign-educated nurses also need a completed VisaScreen credential evaluation through CGFNS before a visa can be issued. Specialty certifications in areas like critical care or perioperative nursing strengthen your application for high-demand units.
How long does the sponsorship process take for a Nursing role at Sentara Health?
Timeline depends on your visa type. H-1B petitions filed under regular processing take three to six months after the April lottery; premium processing reduces USCIS adjudication to around 15 business days but does not speed up the DOL Labor Condition Application step, which typically takes seven to ten business days. TN status can be obtained same-day at a port of entry if documentation is complete. Build in additional time if your nursing license endorsement is still pending.
