Align your portfolio to autonomous systems work
Skydio's backend stack supports real-time flight data, sensor integration, and edge-to-cloud pipelines. Before applying, document any experience with low-latency systems, distributed computing, or hardware-adjacent APIs, since those map directly to what their engineering teams build.
Clarify your visa category before the offer stage
Skydio sponsors multiple visa types, but each comes with different employer obligations and timelines. Know which category fits your situation before the offer conversation, so you're not scrambling to explain OPT STEM extension eligibility or TN qualification criteria under time pressure.
Prepare for ITAR compliance screening early
Aerospace and defense employers like Skydio operate under ITAR, which restricts access to certain technologies based on citizenship and visa status. Some Backend Engineer roles may carry access limitations for non-U.S. persons, so ask about role-level restrictions before investing heavily in a specific position.
Target roles with infrastructure or platform scope
H-1B sponsorship at defense-adjacent companies typically centers on roles requiring specialized technical degrees. Backend Engineer positions framed around platform engineering, cloud infrastructure, or systems reliability carry clearer specialty occupation arguments than generalist web backend roles.
Track your I-94 dates against Skydio's filing timeline
If you're on OPT or a status with a hard expiration, confirm that Skydio's internal hiring and USCIS petition timelines fit inside your authorized stay. A 60-day grace period does not extend work authorization, so misaligned timelines can create gaps that void an otherwise valid offer.
Use Migrate Mate to identify current Backend Engineer openings
Skydio posts Backend Engineer roles across multiple teams and not all listings surface the same sponsorship details. Use Migrate Mate to filter active openings by visa type so you're targeting positions that are explicitly open to sponsored candidates, not relying on outdated job board information.

Find Backend Engineer at Skydio JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Skydio sponsor H-1B visas for Backend Engineers?
Yes, Skydio sponsors H-1B visas for Backend Engineer roles. To qualify, the position must meet USCIS's specialty occupation standard, meaning it typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as computer science or software engineering. Roles with clearly scoped technical responsibilities and degree requirements are the strongest candidates for H-1B sponsorship.
How do I apply for Backend Engineer jobs at Skydio?
You can find and apply for Backend Engineer roles at Skydio through their careers page or through Migrate Mate, which filters listings by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm eligibility before applying. Tailor your application to highlight backend systems experience relevant to Skydio's drone and autonomy platform, and be prepared to discuss visa status early in the recruiter screening call.
Which visa types does Skydio commonly use for Backend Engineers?
Skydio sponsors a range of visa categories for Backend Engineers, including H-1B, F-1 OPT and CPT for students and recent graduates, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying occupations, J-1 for exchange visitors, and employment-based Green Card pathways such as EB-2 and EB-3 for longer-term immigration. The right category depends on your nationality, degree, and current immigration status.
What qualifications does Skydio expect from Backend Engineer candidates?
Skydio's Backend Engineer roles generally require a computer science or software engineering degree and hands-on experience with distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, or real-time data pipelines. Given Skydio's focus on autonomous flight systems, familiarity with hardware-software interfaces, robotics middleware, or low-latency networking is a meaningful differentiator. Some roles may also involve security clearance or ITAR access requirements tied to the defense customer base.
How do I time my application around visa processing if I'm on OPT?
If you're on F-1 OPT, you can begin working at Skydio within your authorized period and your employer can file an H-1B petition during the April cap season. A timely STEM OPT extension, if you qualify, can bridge the gap through the next lottery cycle. USCIS premium processing, currently available for H-1B petitions, can reduce adjudication time to roughly 15 business days, which helps when your OPT expiration is close to the October 1 start date.
