INTRODUCTION
We're looking for a curious, hands-on engineer to join our development team in San Luis Obispo (SLO), California. As an Associate Design Engineer, you'll work on front drivetrain components used by elite cyclists and weekend warriors alike. You'll contribute to new product launches, learn alongside experienced engineers, and help push the limits of what bikes can do. Our office in San Luis Obispo is located on California's Central Coast, just minutes from singletrack and surf. With more than 300 sunny days a year and mild temperatures, SLO makes it easy to get outside, whether that means a morning ride, a lunch hike, or a beach weekend. This is an ideal role for an early career mechanical engineer who's passionate about bikes and innovative product design. Bonus points if you thrive in a hands-on environment and enjoy figuring out how things work (and how to make them better!). At SRAM, we believe in expanding the potential of cycling, and that starts with you.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to a highly innovative team by designing and developing high-quality products for the front drivetrain of a bicycle
- Design and develop high-quality, robust products that achieve project goals
- Apply SRAM engineering best practices and standard procedures to how work is accomplished
- Effectively document design specifications using standard documentation practices
- Regularly communicate, collaborate, and consult with other engineers and team members
- Facilitate problem resolution within the design team and at factories and suppliers
- Mitigate risks through proactive design analysis
- Provide input for development of manufacturing processes and equipment
- May perform other duties as assigned
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- B.S. degree in Engineering (Mechanical preferred), or equivalent
- Knowledge of a variety of materials and manufacturing processes such as forging, CNC machining, injection molding, and stamping
- A solid understanding of electromechanical (mechatronics) principles desired — bonus points if you have this!
- CAD experience required; Creo Parametric preferred
- Familiarity with a variety of engineering tools such as statistics, GD&T, FEA, FMEA, and tolerance analysis
- Exceptional communication, teamwork, and relationship skills
COMPENSATION
- Our Associate Design Engineer salary range is $71,000 - $80,000 depending upon experience. This position is also eligible for an annual corporate bonus based on company and individual performance.
- If you are an experienced Design Engineer with more than 3 years of experience and would like to be considered, our Design Engineer salaries start at $75,000 with the potential to go up to 40% higher based on experience and skills.
BENEFITS
- Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k) with company match; life and disability insurance; and paid time off.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally multiple times per year for one to two weeks at a time.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Open floor plan working environment; meetings and calls scheduled across alternative time zones (AM/PM coordination with other locations).

Target engineering and technical roles
SRAM's sponsorship activity is concentrated in technical disciplines tied to product development and manufacturing. Focus your applications on roles like mechanical engineer, systems engineer, or manufacturing engineer where visa sponsorship is most commonly extended.
Understand SRAM's product-first culture
SRAM is deeply product-driven, with teams built around cycling component innovation. Candidates who can connect their technical background directly to precision manufacturing, materials, or mechatronics will stand out and make sponsorship a much easier conversation.
Highlight OPT or CPT eligibility early
SRAM sponsors F-1 OPT and CPT in addition to H-1B. If you're a current student or recent graduate, leading with your OPT eligibility lowers the barrier for hiring managers and demonstrates you can start without an immediate H-1B petition.
Apply before H-1B cap season closes
SRAM's H-1B sponsorship follows USCIS's April filing window. If you're targeting a full-time sponsored role, aim to have an offer finalized by late February or early March so there's adequate time for petition preparation.
Research roles by U.S. office location
SRAM operates U.S. facilities in Chicago and other locations. Identifying which offices house the engineering and manufacturing teams most relevant to your background helps you apply more strategically. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history.
Leverage TN status if you're Canadian or Mexican
SRAM sponsors TN visas, which offers a faster, cap-exempt alternative to H-1B for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles. If you're eligible, this pathway significantly reduces processing time and lottery risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does SRAM sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, SRAM sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying roles, primarily in engineering and technical functions tied to its manufacturing and product development operations. Sponsorship is most consistently extended to candidates in specialized roles where U.S. degree-level qualifications are required. Given the H-1B lottery, securing an offer well before the April registration window is strongly recommended.
Which visa types does SRAM sponsor?
SRAM sponsors several visa categories, including H-1B, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, TN visa, and J-1 visa. This range makes SRAM accessible to students on practical training, early-career professionals, and experienced hires alike. Canadian and Mexican nationals in engineering roles may find the TN visa pathway particularly straightforward given its cap-exempt status and streamlined processing.
Which departments or roles at SRAM are most likely to receive visa sponsorship?
SRAM's sponsorship activity is concentrated in engineering, product development, and manufacturing operations. Roles such as mechanical engineer, manufacturing engineer, and systems engineer align most closely with the company's technical hiring needs and the specialty occupation standard required for H-1B eligibility. Business, marketing, or operations roles are less commonly sponsored.
How do I find currently open sponsored roles at SRAM?
Migrate Mate is the most efficient way to find SRAM's visa-sponsoring openings. Unlike general job boards, Migrate Mate filters roles by verified sponsorship history, so you're only seeing positions at companies with a real track record of filing for foreign nationals. Search SRAM directly on the platform to see active listings filtered by visa type.
How do I improve my chances of getting sponsored by SRAM?
Align your application to SRAM's core technical disciplines, particularly precision manufacturing, mechanical systems, or product engineering. If you're on F-1 OPT or CPT, make that clear upfront to reduce friction at the offer stage. For H-1B candidates, timing matters significantly, so target offers early enough for SRAM's legal team to prepare a complete petition before the April filing deadline.
