Leverage your F-1 OPT or CPT status strategically
Evansville actively supports F-1 students through OPT and CPT, which can serve as a bridge to longer-term H-1B sponsorship. Starting in a student work authorization status gives you time to demonstrate value before petitioning for employer-sponsored status.
Engage the international student office early
Universities like Evansville process visa sponsorship through their HR and international services offices. Connecting with these offices before or during your application signals awareness of the process and can clarify whether a specific role is sponsorship-eligible.
Understand the H-1B cap-exempt advantage
As a nonprofit university, the University of Evansville is cap-exempt for H-1B purposes, meaning it can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery. This significantly improves your chances compared to for-profit employers subject to the cap.
Align your credentials with the specialty occupation standard
H-1B approval at any university depends on demonstrating a direct connection between your degree and the role. For Evansville positions, ensure your application materials clearly map your academic qualifications to the specific job responsibilities.
