Verify Your Nursing License Transfers
Mississippi requires a state-issued RN license before you can practice. If you hold a license from another state or country, start the Mississippi Board of Nursing endorsement or NCLEX process early, since delays here stall your entire application timeline.
Target UMMC's Specialty Units Directly
UMMC runs the only Level I trauma center in Mississippi and has active hiring across its Children's of Mississippi and cancer units. Targeting these high-demand specialty areas improves your odds compared to applying broadly across general nursing postings.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Sponsorship-Confirmed Roles
Not every UMMC nursing posting explicitly states visa sponsorship. Use Migrate Mate to surface roles where UMMC has an active sponsorship track record, so you're applying where your visa status won't disqualify you at the screening stage.
Understand How PERM Fits Academic Medical Employers
UMMC sponsors Green Cards through the PERM labor certification process for select nursing roles. Academic medical centers often pursue EB-2 or EB-3 categories, so ask HR during the offer stage which pathway they're prepared to initiate and on what timeline.
Align Your Application with UMMC's Academic Calendar
As part of the University of Mississippi system, UMMC sees hiring cycles tied to academic and fiscal year schedules. Applications submitted in late spring and late fall tend to align with budget approvals, when hiring managers have active headcount to fill.
Prepare Your Credentials Package Before Outreach
UMMC's nursing hiring process moves faster when your credential evaluation, NCLEX scores, and any foreign degree equivalency documentation are already complete. USCIS and DOL both require these records for H-1B and PERM filings, so having them ready removes bottlenecks.

Find Nursing at University of Mississippi Medical Center JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Mississippi Medical Center sponsor H-1B visas for Nursings?
Yes, UMMC sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying nursing roles. Nursing positions generally meet the specialty occupation standard when the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in nursing as a minimum requirement. UMMC's status as a public academic medical center means it qualifies as a cap-exempt employer, which allows H-1B petitions to be filed with USCIS year-round without waiting for the annual lottery.
How do I apply for Nursing jobs at University of Mississippi Medical Center?
Applications go through UMMC's official careers portal, where nursing roles are listed by unit and department. You'll create a profile, upload your resume, and complete any required screening questions. Since not every posting explicitly flags visa sponsorship, browsing through Migrate Mate lets you identify UMMC nursing roles where sponsorship has been confirmed, saving you from applying to positions that won't move forward with your visa status.
Which visa types does UMMC commonly use for Nursing roles?
H-1B is the most common nonimmigrant visa for registered nurses at UMMC, particularly for roles requiring a BSN or higher. Because UMMC is a cap-exempt employer, filings aren't tied to the annual H-1B lottery. For longer-term pathways, UMMC has used EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM labor certification. TN visas apply to Canadian and Mexican nationals who qualify under the USMCA's nurse classification.
What qualifications does UMMC expect for international nursing candidates?
At minimum, you'll need a valid Mississippi RN license or be actively in the endorsement process, plus NCLEX passage. Most clinical nursing roles at UMMC require a BSN, and specialty or advanced practice positions may require a graduate degree. International candidates should also have their foreign nursing credentials evaluated by a NACES-approved agency before applying, since USCIS requires this documentation for H-1B petitions.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take at UMMC?
Because UMMC is cap-exempt, H-1B petitions can be filed at any time, which removes the lottery wait. Standard USCIS processing runs three to five months, though premium processing can reduce that to 15 business days for an additional fee. If UMMC pursues PERM-based Green Card sponsorship, the full process from labor certification through I-485 adjustment typically takes one to three years depending on your priority date and country of birth.
