Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Registered Nurse Jobs at University of Mississippi Medical Center Jobs
Get your credentials evaluated before applying
International nursing degrees need a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved organization before UMMC's HR team will move forward. Start this process early because evaluations can take four to eight weeks and will hold up your application if you wait.
Pass the NCLEX before your interview stage
UMMC requires active Mississippi RN licensure or eligibility before sponsorship paperwork begins. Sitting the NCLEX and securing your license in advance removes a major bottleneck and signals to hiring managers you're ready to start.
Target UMMC's specialty units with documented shortages
Academic medical centers like UMMC are most likely to sponsor for hard-to-fill units such as ICU, OR, and labor and delivery. Tailor your resume to highlight specialty clinical hours in these areas to strengthen your case for sponsorship.
Use Migrate Mate to track open nursing roles
UMMC posts Registered Nurse openings across multiple departments at different times. Use Migrate Mate to filter and monitor positions at UMMC specifically tagged for visa sponsorship so you're applying to roles where sponsorship is already confirmed.
Ask HR directly about their EB-3 filing timeline
UMMC sponsors Green Cards through the EB-3 pathway, which requires PERM labor certification through DOL before USCIS can process the immigrant petition. Ask the recruiter upfront whether the role you're interviewing for is already PERM-ready or will require a new filing.
Confirm TN eligibility if you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship
Registered Nurses from Canada or Mexico may qualify for TN status, which is faster to obtain than H-1B and has no lottery. UMMC has sponsored TN visas for nursing roles, so clarify this option with HR before assuming H-1B is your only path.

Find Registered Nurse at University of Mississippi Medical Center JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Mississippi Medical Center sponsor H-1B visas for Registered Nurses?
Yes, UMMC sponsors H-1B visas for Registered Nurses. As an academic medical center, UMMC qualifies as a cap-exempt employer, which means it can file H-1B petitions with USCIS at any time of year without waiting for the annual lottery. That gives internationally trained nurses a significant advantage over applicants pursuing cap-subject employers.
How do I apply for Registered Nurse jobs at University of Mississippi Medical Center?
Applications go through UMMC's careers portal on their official website. Search by job category or unit, and look for postings that indicate visa sponsorship eligibility. Before applying, confirm you hold or are eligible for Mississippi RN licensure, since UMMC typically requires active licensure or an endorsement pathway to be in progress before moving to offer.
Which visa types does University of Mississippi Medical Center commonly use for Registered Nurse roles?
UMMC commonly sponsors H-1B, TN, J-1, and immigrant visa pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for Registered Nurses. The EB-3 route is typical for permanent residency and involves PERM labor certification through DOL. J-1 visas are more often tied to specific training or exchange visitor programs rather than standard staff nursing roles. You can browse currently sponsored openings on Migrate Mate.
What qualifications does University of Mississippi Medical Center expect for sponsored Registered Nurse positions?
UMMC expects candidates to have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or an Associate Degree in Nursing paired with relevant clinical experience. Specialty units, including the ICU, OR, and pediatrics, typically require prior unit-specific experience. International applicants also need a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved body and must hold or be eligible for Mississippi RN licensure before sponsorship paperwork can begin.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Registered Nurse role at UMMC?
Timeline depends on visa type. H-1B petitions at a cap-exempt employer like UMMC can be approved by USCIS in two to four months for standard processing. EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through the PERM process typically takes one to three years from initial filing to approval, depending on DOL processing times and your country of birth. Build in time for NCLEX preparation and credential evaluation before any of this starts.
