Credential Your Clinical Qualifications Early
U.S. academic medical employers require state licensure and credential verification before extending offers. Start the Tennessee board application process before you begin interviewing, since licensing timelines can outlast a job search by months.
Target Roles Tied to Academic Programs
University of Tennessee's Healthcare hiring is closely linked to its graduate medical education and research programs. Roles attached to grant-funded research or residency programs are more likely to include employer-initiated sponsorship, since the university has operational incentive to retain those hires long-term.
Distinguish H-1B from EB-2 Sponsorship Timelines
University of Tennessee sponsors both H-1B visas and Green Card pathways under EB-2 and EB-3. H-1B gets you working quickly after USCIS approval; PERM labor certification for a Green Card runs on a separate, longer track that you'll want to discuss at the offer stage, not after onboarding.
Ask HR About Cap-Exempt Filing Status
As a public research university, University of Tennessee may qualify as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, meaning your petition could bypass the annual 85,000-slot lottery. Confirm this directly with their international HR team before timing your job search around the April lottery window.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Open Roles by Visa Type
Healthcare openings vary widely in sponsorship eligibility depending on department and funding source. Use Migrate Mate to browse University of Tennessee's current Healthcare listings filtered by visa sponsorship so you're only pursuing roles where sponsorship is already on the table.
Prepare a Specialty Occupation Narrative for Clinical Roles
USCIS requires that H-1B petitions demonstrate the position qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a specific bachelor's degree or higher. For Healthcare roles in a university setting, your offer letter and job description should explicitly tie required duties to your degree field, not just list general clinical responsibilities.

Find Healthcare at University of Tennessee JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Tennessee sponsor H-1B visas for Healthcares?
Yes, University of Tennessee sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Healthcare roles. As a public research university, it may file H-1B petitions outside the standard annual lottery cap, which means sponsorship isn't tied to the April registration window. Eligibility depends on the specific role, department funding, and whether the position meets USCIS specialty occupation requirements.
How do I apply for Healthcare jobs at University of Tennessee?
Applications go through University of Tennessee's official careers portal. Search by department or job category and look for roles that indicate visa sponsorship eligibility in the posting. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse confirmed visa-sponsoring Healthcare openings at the university, which filters out roles where sponsorship isn't available before you invest time applying.
Which visa types does University of Tennessee commonly use for Healthcare roles?
University of Tennessee uses H-1B visas for most skilled Healthcare positions requiring a specialty degree. For candidates pursuing permanent residence, the university also sponsors Green Card petitions through the EB-2 and EB-3 employment-based categories, typically initiated after the employee has been working in a qualifying role for a defined period.
What qualifications are expected for Healthcare roles at University of Tennessee?
Expectations vary by role. Clinical positions typically require state licensure in Tennessee, relevant certifications, and a degree in a specific health science field. Research or administrative Healthcare roles often require a graduate-level degree tied directly to the position's duties. For H-1B sponsorship, the degree must align with the specific job, not just the general Healthcare field.
How do I time my application around the H-1B filing process at University of Tennessee?
If University of Tennessee qualifies as a cap-exempt employer, you don't need to plan around the April H-1B lottery, and USCIS processing can begin at any point in the year. Standard H-1B adjudication takes three to five months without premium processing. Factor in Tennessee board licensing timelines separately, since those run independently of USCIS and can add several months to your start date.
