Tips for Finding Physics Jobs at UT Southwestern Medical Center
Document your degree equivalency early
USCIS requires that your Physics degree directly supports the specialty occupation. If you hold a three-year bachelor's degree or a degree from outside the U.S., prepare a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before applying.
Target medical physics and radiation roles
UT Southwestern's Physics openings are concentrated in clinical and research settings tied to its cancer center and radiology departments. Board certification from the American Board of Radiology strengthens your application and signals readiness for sponsored positions.
Verify your status fits the role timeline
Many Physics roles require licensing or clinical credentialing that takes months to complete. If you're on OPT, confirm your end date allows time to finish credentialing before your employer needs to file an H-1B or E-3 visa petition.
Understand the Labor Condition Application step
Before UT Southwestern can file your H-1B or E-3 petition, they must certify an LCA with the DOL confirming the offered wage meets the prevailing wage for your Physics role in the Dallas market. This step typically adds two to four weeks.
Search Physics openings through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Physics roles at UT Southwestern by visa type, so you only apply to positions the institution actively sponsors. This saves time and surfaces roles matched to your specific authorization status.
Clarify sponsorship scope during the offer stage
Ask the hiring team whether sponsorship covers just the initial petition or also future Green Card support through PERM. Academic medical centers often have immigration counsel on staff, so get written confirmation of what the institution will cover before you accept.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does UT Southwestern Medical Center sponsor H-1B visas for Physics roles?
Yes. UT Southwestern Medical Center sponsors H-1B visas for Physics positions, particularly roles in medical physics, radiation therapy, and research that qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS guidelines. Candidates typically need at least a master's degree or a bachelor's degree paired with relevant clinical or research experience. The institution's in-house or contracted immigration support handles the LCA filing with DOL and the subsequent USCIS petition.
How do I apply for Physics jobs at UT Southwestern Medical Center?
Applications go through UT Southwestern's careers portal, where Physics roles are listed under clinical, research, or academic categories depending on the department. Tailor your CV to highlight your physics specialization and any clinical certifications. You can also browse open Physics positions filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate before applying directly through the institution's official site.
Which visa types are commonly used for Physics roles at UT Southwestern Medical Center?
H-1B is the most common path for Physics professionals at UT Southwestern, covering both cap-subject and cap-exempt filings since the institution qualifies as a nonprofit research organization. Australian citizens can pursue the E-3 visa as an alternative. F-1 students finishing degrees in physics can use OPT or CPT for research rotations, and Canadian and Mexican nationals may be eligible for TN visa status if the role qualifies under USMCA.
What qualifications does UT Southwestern Medical Center expect for sponsored Physics positions?
Most Physics roles require at least a master's degree, with doctoral degrees expected for independent research or faculty-adjacent positions. Clinical medical physics roles typically require or strongly prefer board certification from the American Board of Radiology or the American Board of Medical Physics. Hands-on experience with radiation therapy equipment, imaging systems, or physics research in a hospital or academic medical center setting makes candidates significantly more competitive.
How do I plan my timeline for H-1B sponsorship at UT Southwestern Medical Center?
If you need H-1B sponsorship, align your job search with the April lottery registration window for an October 1 start date. Because UT Southwestern qualifies as a cap-exempt employer, petitions can be filed year-round without lottery participation, which significantly shortens the timeline. Standard USCIS adjudication runs three to six months; premium processing reduces that to 15 business days. Factor in two to four weeks for DOL's LCA certification before USCIS filing begins.
