Align your credentials with specialty occupation standards
Physics roles at research universities must meet USCIS specialty occupation criteria. A degree in physics or a closely related field is expected, not just STEM broadly. Make sure your transcripts and credential evaluations clearly reflect the specific field alignment.
Target roles connected to active research grants
University of Rochester's Physics department runs federally funded research programs. Positions tied to active grants move faster through internal approval because funding is already secured. Look for postdoctoral, research scientist, and lab-based roles in your application targeting.
Engage the department before a formal application
Faculty-driven hiring is common in university Physics departments. Reaching out directly to professors whose research matches your background can surface unlisted roles or influence how your application is prioritized before it reaches HR.
Understand the LCA filing timeline for your start date
Your employer files a Labor Condition Application with DOL before submitting an H-1B petition to USCIS. LCA certification typically takes seven business days. Factor this into your negotiated start date so the visa petition isn't rushed after you accept an offer.
Clarify J-1 home residency requirements early
University Physics roles frequently use the J-1 visa for postdocs and visiting researchers. If your J-1 carries a two-year home residency requirement, you'll need a waiver before switching to H-1B status. Raise this with your future employer before signing any offer letter.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Physics roles
Physics openings at universities fill quickly and aren't always posted on general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to browse current Physics positions at University of Rochester filtered by visa sponsorship type so you're applying to roles where sponsorship is already confirmed.

Find Physics at University of Rochester JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Rochester sponsor H-1B visas for Physics roles?
Yes, University of Rochester sponsors H-1B visas for Physics positions, particularly for research scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty-track roles requiring a degree in physics or a closely related specialty. As a cap-exempt institution, the university can file H-1B petitions at any time of year without waiting for the annual lottery, which gives Physics candidates significantly more flexibility on start dates.
How do I apply for Physics jobs at University of Rochester?
Physics positions at University of Rochester are posted through the university's central careers portal and, for faculty roles, often through discipline-specific listings. Reviewing department research pages before applying helps you tailor your materials to active projects. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse current Physics openings at University of Rochester filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility, so you only pursue roles where international candidates are welcome.
Which visa types are commonly used for Physics roles at University of Rochester?
Physics roles at University of Rochester are commonly filled using H-1B, J-1, and F-1 OPT visas, depending on the position type and the candidate's current status. J-1 is widely used for postdoctoral researchers and visiting scholars. H-1B is the standard path for longer-term research scientist and faculty positions. TN is available for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose Physics work falls within covered USMCA occupational categories.
What qualifications are expected for Physics roles at University of Rochester?
Most Physics roles require at minimum a master's degree, with doctoral degrees expected for research scientist, postdoctoral, and faculty positions. Specialized experience in areas such as optics, quantum systems, nuclear physics, or astrophysics is often directly relevant given the department's research focus. For USCIS to approve an H-1B petition, your degree must be in a field directly tied to the specific job duties, not just a general science background.
How do visa sponsorship timelines work for Physics hires at University of Rochester?
Because the University of Rochester is a cap-exempt employer, H-1B petitions can be filed year-round rather than waiting for the April lottery window. Standard USCIS processing runs three to five months, and premium processing can reduce that to roughly 15 business days. Expect the internal process, including DOL Labor Condition Application certification and university authorization, to add two to four weeks before the petition is submitted.
