Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
Physics roles at Duke must qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS criteria. Frame your degree and research specialization around the specific position requirements, since a generalist physics background is harder to sponsor than a focused one tied to the role's core duties.
Target departmental research groups directly
Duke's Physics department hires through individual faculty-led labs, not just central HR postings. Identify professors whose research aligns with your background and reach out before a position is listed publicly. Many sponsored roles never appear on general job boards.
Distinguish postdoc from faculty sponsorship timelines
Postdoctoral appointments at Duke typically move faster through H-1B filing than tenure-track faculty searches. If you're in a time-sensitive visa situation, a postdoc offer may give you a more workable filing window than waiting on a faculty search cycle to conclude.
Confirm your offer letter specifies the visa category
Before signing, verify whether Duke is filing H-1B, E-3, or initiating PERM for a Green Card. Each has different processing timelines and start date constraints, and you need to plan around premium processing availability if your current status has a hard expiration.
Use Migrate Mate to surface open Physics roles at Duke
Physics openings at Duke are posted across multiple systems and disappear quickly. Use Migrate Mate to track verified visa-sponsoring Physics positions at Duke so you're applying to live roles, not outdated listings, and can prioritize employers with active sponsorship history.
Prepare your publication record for LCA wage matching
DOL's Labor Condition Application requires Duke to certify your offered wage meets the prevailing wage for your role and location. A strong publication and citation record helps justify senior-level placement under higher wage tiers, which can also strengthen your PERM case if a Green Card path is planned.

Does Duke University sponsor H-1B visas for Physics roles?
Yes, Duke University sponsors H-1B visas for Physics positions, including postdoctoral appointments, research scientist roles, and faculty positions. Duke's Office of International Services manages the filing process. Because H-1B sponsorship requires the role to qualify as a specialty occupation, your application should clearly connect your physics specialization to the specific duties of the position.
How do I apply for Physics jobs at Duke University?
Applications for Physics roles at Duke go through Duke's official careers portal, but faculty and research positions are often also listed through department websites and lab group pages. Reaching out directly to relevant research groups can surface opportunities before they're widely advertised. You can also browse current openings on Migrate Mate, which filters for positions at employers with confirmed visa sponsorship history.
Which visa types does Duke University commonly use for Physics hires?
Duke sponsors H-1B visas most frequently for Physics roles, covering both cap-subject and cap-exempt filings, since universities qualify for the H-1B cap exemption. Australian nationals may be sponsored under the E-3 visa. For longer-term or tenure-track positions, Duke may also initiate PERM labor certification to support EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship.
What qualifications does Duke University expect for Physics positions?
Requirements vary by role type. Postdoctoral positions require a completed PhD in Physics or a closely related field, usually with a publication record in the relevant subfield. Research scientist and staff roles may accept candidates with master's-level credentials and significant lab or industry experience. Faculty positions expect a strong research portfolio, evidence of external funding potential, and teaching experience at the university level.
How do I navigate the visa filing timeline when joining Duke for a Physics role?
For cap-exempt H-1B filings, Duke can file year-round with USCIS, which removes the April lottery constraint that affects most employers. Standard processing runs several months, so confirm your start date with Duke's international services office early. If your current status has a hard end date, ask Duke whether premium processing is available for your petition to compress the timeline.
