Verify your NP licensure transfers to North Carolina
North Carolina requires a separate state license before you can practice as an NP. Start the NCBON endorsement process early, it can take several weeks and Duke's HR won't initiate sponsorship paperwork until licensure is confirmed.
Target Duke's student and faculty health clinics
Duke's campus health and occupational health units hire NPs on a rolling basis and have a longer history of sponsoring international clinical staff than some of its specialty outpatient departments. These postings are worth prioritizing when you apply.
Get your credential evaluation done before applying
If your nursing degree is from outside the U.S., Duke's immigration team will need a credential equivalency evaluation from a NACES-approved agency. Having it ready at application stage removes a common bottleneck in the early sponsorship review.
Ask explicitly about E-3 if you hold Australian citizenship
Duke sponsors both H-1B and E-3 visas for clinical roles. The E-3 has no lottery and processes faster than H-1B, so if you're an Australian citizen, confirm with the recruiter that your offer letter specifies E-3 as the intended visa category.
Understand Duke's PERM timeline for Green Card pathways
Duke supports EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship for qualifying NPs, but PERM labor certification typically takes 12 to 18 months to clear DOL review. Raise permanent residency intent during the offer stage, not after you've started, to align timelines with your status.
Browse open NP roles through Migrate Mate before applying direct
Search Migrate Mate to filter Duke University NP roles by visa type before approaching their careers portal. Seeing which positions have active sponsorship history lets you prioritize applications where international candidates have the strongest track record.

Find Nurse Practitioner at Duke University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Duke University sponsor H-1B visas for Nurse Practitioners?
Yes, Duke University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Nurse Practitioner roles. NP positions typically meet the specialty occupation standard because they require at minimum a Master of Science in Nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Practice. Duke works with immigration counsel to file petitions, but timing is tied to the annual H-1B cap and lottery, so roles that open in the fall often target an October 1 start date.
Which visa types does Duke University commonly use for Nurse Practitioners?
Duke sponsors H-1B, E-3, and permanent resident pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for NP roles. H-1B is the most common route for non-Australian candidates. Australian citizens can pursue the E-3, which avoids the lottery entirely and allows faster processing. For long-term hires, Duke has initiated PERM labor certification for NPs moving toward Green Card sponsorship.
What qualifications does Duke University expect for Nurse Practitioner roles?
Duke typically requires a Master of Science in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice, a valid North Carolina NP license, and national certification from a body such as AANP or ANCC. For internationally trained applicants, a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency is expected to confirm degree equivalency before the offer stage. Specialty certifications in areas like family practice or acute care strengthen your candidacy for specific units.
How do I apply for Nurse Practitioner jobs at Duke University?
Start by searching Migrate Mate to identify active Duke NP postings with visa sponsorship history, then apply through Duke's official careers portal at careers.duke.edu. When submitting your application, upload your North Carolina NP license, national certification, and credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S. During the interview process, confirm sponsorship availability directly with the hiring manager or HR recruiter before progressing to an offer.
How long does the sponsorship process take for a Nurse Practitioner at Duke?
For H-1B, the process runs roughly 6 to 9 months from offer acceptance to a cap-subject start date, including LCA certification through DOL, which typically takes 7 business days, and USCIS petition review. E-3 processing for Australian citizens moves faster, often 4 to 8 weeks from LCA filing to visa issuance at a U.S. consulate. PERM for permanent residency adds 12 to 18 months on top of those timelines.
