Role
We’re looking for builders–intellectually curious, highly entrepreneurial engineers eager to shape the future of AI and ML at Whatnot. You’ll design and scale the core infrastructure that powers machine learning and self-hosted large language model applications across the company, working side by side with machine learning scientists to bring cutting-edge models into production and unlock entirely new product experiences. This means building systems that make advanced ML dependable and fast at scale–from low-latency, large model serving to distributed training & high-throughput GPU inference.
What you'll do:
- Own the infrastructure powering AI and ML models across critical business surfaces–supporting growth, recommendations, trust and safety, fraud, seller tooling, and more.
- Prototype, deploy, and productionalize novel ML architectures that directly shape user experience and marketplace dynamics.
- Design and scale inference infrastructure capable of serving large models with low latency and high throughput.
- Build distributed training and inference pipelines leveraging GPUs and both model and data parallelism.
- Stretch beyond your comfort zone to take on new technical challenges as we scale AI across Whatnot’s ecosystem.
US Based: We offer flexibility to work from home or from one of our global office hubs, and we value in-person time for planning, problem-solving, and connection. Team members in this role must live within commuting distance of our New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco hubs.
You
People who do well at Whatnot tend to be comfortable figuring things out as they go, biased toward action, and genuinely curious about what they're building. They care more about outcomes than credit and stay close to the product and the people using it.
As our next AI/ML Platform Engineer you should have 4+ years of professional experience developing machine learning systems and algorithms, plus:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics or a related technical field, or equivalent work experience.
- 3+ years of software engineering experience building and maintaining production systems for consumer-scale loads.
- 1+ years of professional experience developing software in Python.
- Ability to work autonomously and drive initiatives across multiple product areas and communicate findings with leadership and product teams.
- Experience with operational, search, and key-value databases such as PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Elasticsearch, Redis.
- Firm grasp of visualization tools for monitoring and logging e.g. DataDog, Grafana.
- Familiarity with cloud computing platforms and managed services such as AWS Sagemaker, Lambda, Kinesis, S3, EC2, EKS/ECS, Apache Kafka, Flink.
- Professionalism around collaborating in a remote working environment and well tested, reproducible work.
- Exceptional documentation and communication skills.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Cloud Software Engineer Jobs at Whatnot Jobs
Align your resume to Whatnot's infrastructure stack
Whatnot's platform handles real-time bidding and live video at scale, so highlight experience with distributed systems, cloud-native architecture, and high-throughput services. Generic backend resumes get screened out before a recruiter considers sponsorship.
Target roles before your OPT clock runs out
F-1 OPT gives you 60 days to find a new role after authorization ends. Start your Whatnot application process at least three months before that window, since cloud engineering interview loops often run four to six weeks.
Understand what Whatnot's LCA filing signals
DOL Labor Condition Applications are public record. Reviewing Whatnot's LCA filings for cloud and infrastructure roles tells you the prevailing wage levels the company has committed to, which helps you benchmark your offer before negotiating.
Prepare for H-1B cap timing if you need it
If H-1B is your only path, USCIS registration opens each March for an October 1 start. Time your Whatnot interview process to align with that window, and ask the recruiter explicitly whether the company files cap-subject petitions through outside counsel.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active Cloud Software Engineer openings at Whatnot
Whatnot's sponsorship-eligible cloud roles don't always stay open long. Migrate Mate filters specifically for visa-sponsoring employers in this space, so you can track Whatnot postings and apply before headcount closes.

Find Cloud Software Engineer at Whatnot JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Whatnot sponsor H-1B visas for Cloud Software Engineers?
Yes, Whatnot sponsors H-1B visas for Cloud Software Engineers. The role qualifies as a specialty occupation given its requirement for a degree in computer science, engineering, or a closely related field. If you need an H-1B, confirm with the recruiting team whether the role supports cap-subject filing or a cap-exempt transfer from an existing H-1B employer.
Which visa types does Whatnot support for Cloud Software Engineer roles?
Whatnot supports a broad range of visa categories for this function, including H-1B, E-3 (for Australian citizens), TN (for Canadian and Mexican nationals), F-1 OPT and CPT, J-1, and EB-2 or EB-3 immigrant visa pathways. If you're early in your career on OPT or CPT, Whatnot's sponsorship track record for cloud roles makes it a strong target for long-term status planning.
What qualifications does Whatnot expect for Cloud Software Engineer positions?
Whatnot's cloud engineering roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related discipline. Beyond the degree, the company looks for hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP, distributed systems design, and infrastructure-as-code tooling. Candidates with a background in real-time or high-throughput systems are particularly competitive given Whatnot's live commerce architecture.
How do I apply for Cloud Software Engineer jobs at Whatnot?
Browse active Cloud Software Engineer openings on Whatnot's careers page or use Migrate Mate to filter for current sponsorship-eligible roles at the company. Tailor your application to highlight cloud infrastructure experience relevant to live-platform environments. When you reach the recruiter screen, be direct about your visa status so both sides can align on sponsorship requirements before the technical loop begins.
How do I plan my timeline if I need Whatnot to file an H-1B or start a Green Card process?
For cap-subject H-1B, USCIS registration runs each March and employment can begin October 1 at the earliest, so plan your interview process to close in the winter or early spring. For Green Card sponsorship via PERM, the DOL process alone can take one to two years before an I-140 petition is filed, making it important to discuss long-term sponsorship intentions with your manager once you've started in the role.
