Align your portfolio with live commerce infrastructure
Whatnot's backend runs on real-time auction and streaming systems. Before applying, build or highlight projects involving low-latency APIs, event-driven architectures, or high-throughput data pipelines. Reviewers notice when your experience maps directly to their technical domain.
Verify your visa type fits their sponsorship scope
Whatnot sponsors several nonimmigrant and immigrant visa categories for Backend Engineers. Confirm your specific visa type is covered before investing in the application process. Australians on E-3 and Canadians on TN have different petition requirements than H-1B holders.
Time your application around H-1B cap season
If you need H-1B sponsorship, USCIS accepts registrations in March for an October 1 start date. Target Whatnot's recruiting cycle in late winter so an offer and I-129 petition can be filed before the April deadline.
Request employer confirmation before your OPT expires
F-1 OPT gives you a 60-day grace period after employment ends. If you're transitioning to Whatnot from another employer, get written confirmation of your start date and visa sponsorship intent before your current authorization lapses. USCIS cap-gap rules protect your status during a pending H-1B petition if your OPT expires between April and October 1.
Use Migrate Mate to filter live Backend Engineer roles
Sponsorship-eligible roles at Whatnot aren't always labeled clearly on general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter Backend Engineer openings at Whatnot by visa type so you only spend time on roles that match your authorization situation.
Prepare for PERM if targeting long-term residency
Whatnot sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for Backend Engineers. PERM labor certification through the DOL typically takes 12 to 18 months before an I-140 can be filed. If you're on H-1B, ask your hiring manager about initiating PERM early to protect your priority date.

Does Whatnot sponsor H-1B visas for Backend Engineers?
Yes, Whatnot sponsors H-1B visas for Backend Engineers. The company has a documented history of filing H-1B petitions for technical roles, and backend engineering falls squarely within the specialty occupation criteria USCIS applies to software and systems positions. If you receive an offer, your employer will file the I-129 petition on your behalf before the April cap deadline for an October 1 start.
How do I apply for Backend Engineer jobs at Whatnot?
Applications go through Whatnot's careers page, where backend roles are listed by team and seniority. You can also browse and filter sponsorship-eligible Backend Engineer openings at Whatnot directly on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles by visa type. Tailor your resume to Whatnot's live commerce infrastructure, covering real-time systems, distributed architecture, and experience with high-concurrency environments.
Which visa types does Whatnot commonly use for Backend Engineers?
Whatnot sponsors a range of visa categories for Backend Engineers, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for current international students, J-1 for exchange visitors, and both EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visas for Green Card pathways. The right category depends on your nationality, education, and where you are in the immigration process.
What qualifications does Whatnot expect from Backend Engineer candidates?
Whatnot's Backend Engineer roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, which also satisfies the specialty occupation requirement for H-1B and E-3 petitions. Practically, they prioritize experience with scalable distributed systems, real-time data processing, and languages like Go or Python. Familiarity with live-streaming or marketplace platforms is a meaningful differentiator.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take after receiving an offer from Whatnot?
Timeline depends on your visa type. H-1B petitions filed under standard processing take three to six months with USCIS. Premium processing reduces that to 15 business days. TN status for Canadians can be obtained at the border on the day you start. E-3 applicants processing at an Australian consulate typically wait two to six weeks for an appointment and a decision. Factor these timelines into your offer negotiation and start date conversation.
