ROLE
The Fraud Experience team builds intelligent, real-time systems that safeguard Whatnot’s marketplace from malicious activity. We design, develop, and deploy end-to-end, ML-driven systems that proactively identify and mitigate fraud — blending real-time detection with transparent, user-centered enforcement.
- Lead the full architecture of fraud detection, prevention, and intervention systems — spanning machine learning, backend, and client-side components.
- Build intelligent user graphs to model behavioral patterns, detect collusion networks, and uncover account connectivity at scale.
- Design, train, and deploy both traditional ML and LLM-powered models to detect fraudulent activity across users, payments, and marketplace interactions.
- Develop scalable data pipelines and real-time inference systems capable of supporting high-volume, low-latency ML workloads.
- Create human-in-the-loop systems that continuously refine detection accuracy and adapt to evolving adversarial tactics.
- Perform deep behavioral and adversarial data analysis to surface emerging fraud trends and drive continuous system improvement.
- Stay ahead of the curve by translating new insights into adaptive, production-ready systems that evolve as fast as our adversaries.
We offer flexibility to work from home or from one of our global office hubs, and we value in-person time for planning, problem-solving, and connection. Team members in this role must live within commuting distance of our Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco or Seattle hub.

Align your portfolio to live commerce challenges
Whatnot's engineering work centers on real-time bidding, auction infrastructure, and high-throughput marketplace systems. Demonstrating hands-on experience with low-latency backend services or mobile commerce features signals direct relevance to their open Software Engineer roles.
Confirm your visa type before applying
Whatnot sponsors multiple visa categories, so clarifying upfront whether your situation is H-1B, E-3, TN, or F-1 OPT lets recruiters route your application correctly and avoids delays when the team initiates your sponsorship paperwork.
Request E-Verify enrollment confirmation early
For F-1 OPT holders, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify before STEM OPT extension is approved by USCIS. Confirm Whatnot's enrollment status at the offer stage, not after you've accepted, to protect your authorization timeline.
Build the specialty occupation case for your role
USCIS scrutinizes whether a Software Engineer role genuinely requires a theoretical and practical application of a specific technical degree. Document the specific architecture decisions, systems design work, or distributed systems knowledge your Whatnot role will demand before your employer files the H-1B petition.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active Whatnot openings
Software Engineer roles at Whatnot open and close quickly. Use Migrate Mate to filter Whatnot's active listings by visa type so you apply to roles aligned with your sponsorship needs before requisitions fill.
Time your H-1B filing around the retail calendar
Retail-adjacent companies like Whatnot often accelerate hiring ahead of peak commerce seasons. Filing an H-1B petition in April for an October 1 start date means aligning your offer timeline to the cap season, giving both you and your employer enough runway before the busy period.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Whatnot sponsor H-1B visas for Software Engineers?
Yes, Whatnot sponsors H-1B visas for Software Engineer roles. The company has an active sponsorship history across engineering functions, supporting both initial H-1B cap filings and transfers for candidates already holding H-1B status. If you're applying as a cap-subject candidate, your petition would need to be filed in April for an October 1 start date, so offer timing matters.
How do I apply for Software Engineer jobs at Whatnot?
You can browse and apply for Software Engineer roles at Whatnot directly through Migrate Mate, which filters open positions by visa sponsorship type so you can identify roles that match your situation before applying. Whatnot's engineering hiring typically involves an initial recruiter screen, a technical assessment, and multiple rounds of system design and coding interviews focused on real-time and marketplace systems.
Which visa types does Whatnot sponsor for Software Engineer roles?
Whatnot sponsors a range of visa types for Software Engineers, including H-1B, E-3 visa for Australian citizens, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for students, J-1 visa, and employment-based Green Cards through the EB-2 and EB-3 categories. The right category depends on your nationality, degree, and current immigration status.
What qualifications does Whatnot expect from Software Engineer candidates?
Whatnot's Software Engineer roles generally require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. For H-1B purposes, the degree must align specifically with the role's technical requirements. Practically, Whatnot's engineering interviews emphasize distributed systems, real-time infrastructure, and mobile or backend development, reflecting the architecture of their live commerce platform.
How do I plan my timeline if Whatnot is sponsoring my H-1B?
If you're a new H-1B cap-subject applicant, USCIS accepts petitions starting April 1 each year for an October 1 start date. Whatnot's recruiter and legal team typically need several weeks to prepare the Labor Condition Application through DOL and assemble your I-129 petition. Starting conversations with recruiters by January or February gives you the most runway to meet that April filing window.
