Our Opportunity
Chewy is seeking a Backend Software Engineer III in Boston, MA to help build and scale the platform-driven ecosystem powering Chewy Vet Care across clinics, digital experiences, and pharmacy. You will design and develop highly available backend services, APIs, and event-driven systems that support critical capabilities such as scheduling, prescriptions, medical records, payments, and more.
In this role, you will partner closely with Product, Data, Clinical, and Engineering teams to solve complex technical problems and support both organic growth and integrations resulting from acquisitions. You will also contribute to the evolution of CVC toward a unified, platform-first architecture while helping establish strong engineering practices across the team.
About You
You are a hands-on backend engineer who enjoys solving complex problems within scalable, distributed environments. You approach system design thoughtfully, balancing immediate business needs with long-term reliability, maintainability, and performance. You work effectively through ambiguity, collaborate across technical and nontechnical teams, and provide technical leadership through design discussions, code reviews, and mentorship.
You have experience working with loosely coupled services, real-time event processing, vendor integrations, event-driven architecture, and modern CI/CD practices. You also understand how AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude, can improve engineering productivity while recognizing where careful review and human judgment remain essential.
What You'll Do:
- Design, build, test, and maintain scalable distributed systems using Java, Spring Boot, and AWS services such as Lambda, SQS, DynamoDB, S3, and API Gateway.
- Own features throughout the software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering and architecture review through implementation, deployment, and post-launch measurement.
- Translate ambiguous business and clinical needs into reliable, maintainable, and scalable technical solutions.
- Collaborate with Product, Data, Clinical, and Engineering partners to deliver capabilities across clinic, customer, and pharmacy experiences.
- Contribute to platform-first architecture and API-driven integrations across Chewy Vet Care and third-party systems.
- Improve system reliability by strengthening observability, troubleshooting production issues, conducting root-cause analyses, and addressing recurring operational risks.
- Advance engineering practices in automated testing, secure coding, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and performance optimization.
- Provide technical guidance through design sessions, code reviews, documentation, and mentorship.
- Participate in an on-call rotation and support the operational health of production services.
What You'll Need:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- 7+ years of experience developing scalable, distributed applications using Java, JavaScript, AWS, Spring Boot, or comparable technologies.
- Hands-on experience designing, building, deploying, and operating scalable, highly available systems.
- Experience troubleshooting distributed applications using technologies such as SNS, Kafka, Dynatrace, or Amazon CloudWatch.
- Strong knowledge of software engineering practices across the full development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, build processes, testing, deployment, and production operations.
- Proficiency in object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, problem-solving, and complexity analysis.
- Ability to participate in an on-call rotation and respond effectively to production issues.
Bonus:
- Experience in e-commerce.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies such as Scrum or XP.
- Experience with configuration and deployment tools such as Terraform, along with knowledge of infrastructure, debugging, networking, compute, storage, and virtualization.
- Experience with React and Typescript.

Tailor your resume to retail engineering
Chewy's engineering roles lean heavily on e-commerce systems, inventory management, and fulfillment technology. Highlighting experience with high-throughput transactional systems or distributed platforms signals immediate fit and reduces friction during technical screening.
Confirm sponsorship before your interview
Chewy sponsors multiple visa types for Software Engineers, but not every role or team is approved for every category. Ask the recruiter directly which visa types the specific team has filed for, so there are no surprises at the offer stage.
Understand how OPT timing affects your start date
If you're on F-1 OPT, your available work authorization window affects when Chewy can onboard you. Cap-gap protection through a timely H-1B filing can bridge the gap, but your recruiter needs to know your OPT end date early in the process.
Track open Software Engineer roles at Chewy
Chewy posts roles across multiple engineering functions, including platform, fulfillment, and data. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Chewy Software Engineer openings that include visa sponsorship, so you're only applying where sponsorship is confirmed.
Prepare for a multi-round technical process
Chewy's Software Engineer interviews typically include system design and coding rounds. A stronger technical performance reduces employer hesitation around sponsorship overhead, since teams that want you badly enough will prioritize getting the filing done.
Know how PERM affects your long-term status
If you're targeting a Green Card through employment, ask whether Chewy supports PERM-based sponsorship for your role level. DOL's PERM process requires documenting a good-faith U.S. labor search, and initiating it early matters significantly for Indian and Chinese nationals facing backlogs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Chewy sponsor H-1B visas for Software Engineers?
Yes, Chewy sponsors H-1B visas for Software Engineer roles. The company has an established record of filing H-1B petitions for engineering positions. If you're in the H-1B lottery or transitioning from OPT, confirm with the recruiter early that the specific role and team are approved for H-1B visa sponsorship before accepting an offer.
How do I apply for Software Engineer jobs at Chewy?
You can browse and apply for Software Engineer roles at Chewy directly through Chewy's careers site. To find openings specifically confirmed for visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate to filter Chewy's Software Engineer listings by visa type. Applying through a targeted list reduces time spent on roles that don't support your sponsorship category.
Which visa types does Chewy commonly sponsor for Software Engineers?
Chewy sponsors H-1B, TN visa, and F-1 OPT and CPT for Software Engineers, and also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways for longer-term sponsorship. TN visa is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles. The right category depends on your nationality, degree, and where you are in your immigration timeline.
What qualifications does Chewy expect for Software Engineer roles?
Chewy's Software Engineer roles typically require a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field. Practical experience with distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, or e-commerce platforms strengthens your application. For H-1B eligibility, the position must qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning the degree requirement is specific to the role.
How do I time my application around H-1B filing deadlines?
USCIS opens H-1B registration each March for the following October 1 start date. To be included, you need a signed offer letter and a registered employer before the registration window closes. Targeting Chewy roles in the preceding January through February gives enough runway for the employer to complete registration before the USCIS deadline.
