đź’» Role
We're looking for an experienced Product Manager, Payments to lead the strategy and execution of the core payments platform and experiences that underpin the Whatnot marketplace. You will own the systems that power how buyers pay, how sellers get paid, and how money moves through our ecosystem—processing billions in annual GMV across 50+ categories and enabling payouts to tens of thousands of sellers globally.
In this role, you will work across the full payments stack, from payment initiation and processing to payouts, refunds, financial data infrastructure, and incentive instruments. You will partner closely with Engineering, Design, Finance, Trust & Safety, Legal, CX, Operations, and other product teams to deliver capabilities that unlock growth while maintaining strong financial controls and managing risk.
You will report to a VP of Product. Team members in this role are required to be within commuting distance of our New York, NY, San Francisco, CA, Seattle, WA, or Los Angeles, CA hubs.
You will:
-
Own the product vision and roadmap for Payments, balancing short-term wins with long-term platform investments that support extremely fast growth and international expansion.
-
Deeply understand stakeholder needs – from sellers managing their businesses to Finance teams closing monthly books to CX resolving refund disputes; and translate them into clear product strategies and scalable systems.
-
Define and own core payments metrics including authorization rates, payout success, refund rates, processing costs, and financial accuracy. Use these to guide prioritization and measure impact.
-
Drive execution across multiple workstreams, coordinating backend payments systems, payment integrations, and frontend UX while managing dependencies and timelines.
-
Build the financial data foundation the business needs, including ledger systems that power internal reporting, seller transparency and tools they need, and accurate month-end closes.
-
Partner cross-functionally with Finance, Legal, Trust & Safety, CX, and Operations to ensure compliance, manage risk appropriately, and support efficient operations at scale.
-
Establish metrics and experimentation frameworks to validate performance, test new capabilities, and continuously improve outcomes for users and internal teams.
What We’re Looking For:
-
10+ years of product management experience with significant focus on payments products and platforms (card/alternative payments, payouts, refunds, chargebacks, ledger systems).
-
Proven experience owning high-volume, mission-critical payments systems at marketplace, fintech or platform companies, including deep familiarity with processors like Stripe, Braintree, Adyen, or similar.
-
Strong product leadership, including setting strategy, influencing cross-functional partners, and driving complex initiatives from 0→1 and 1→N.
-
Deep understanding of financial data, reconciliation, and reporting, particularly supporting Finance, Accounting, and month-end close processes in high-transaction-volume environments.
-
Demonstrated ability to work in ambiguous, fast-paced environments, making sound decisions with imperfect information and balancing speed with risk and quality.
-
Proven track record using data and experimentation to inform product decisions, measure impact, and iterate on complex systems.
-
Strong product discovery and execution skills, translating multi-stakeholder problems into clear requirements and simple, intuitive experiences.
-
Excellent cross-functional communication, with experience partnering closely with Engineering, Design, Finance, Legal, CX/Ops, and risk-oriented teams.
-
High empathy for users and stakeholders, with passion for building trustworthy, transparent financial experiences.
-
Nice to have: Experience in a marketplace or multi-sided platform where payments, incentives, and marketplace dynamics are tightly coupled.

Frame your portfolio around marketplace metrics
Whatnot's product org cares about seller conversion, buyer retention, and GMV growth. Before applying, restructure your portfolio to show outcomes in these terms. A Product Lead who can speak to live commerce dynamics stands out from candidates with generic e-commerce experience.
Target roles with active category mandates
Whatnot organizes product teams around specific verticals like trading cards, sneakers, and collectibles. Applying to a Product Lead role tied to a category that's actively expanding increases your chances of moving quickly through the process compared to open-ended pipeline roles.
Align your start date with H-1B cap timing
If you need cap-subject H-1B sponsorship, USCIS only accepts petitions in April for an October 1 start date. Build your job search timeline backward from that window so your offer and filing are synchronized with the annual cap cycle.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Whatnot's open Product Lead roles
Whatnot posts Product Lead openings across multiple channels, but not all listings flag sponsorship availability. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Whatnot roles that confirm visa sponsorship, so you're only spending time on positions where you're eligible.
Prepare your specialty occupation documentation early
USCIS requires evidence that a Product Lead role qualifies as a specialty occupation, meaning your degree field must connect directly to the position. Gather degree transcripts, job descriptions from past roles, and any certifications that tie your academic background to product management before the I-129 filing stage.

Does Whatnot sponsor H-1B visas for Product Leads?
Yes, Whatnot sponsors H-1B visas for Product Lead roles. The company has an established pattern of filing petitions for this function, which USCIS classifies as a specialty occupation requiring a relevant bachelor's degree or higher. If you're subject to the annual H-1B cap, timing your application to align with the April filing window is essential since the cap-subject lottery runs once per year.
Which visa types does Whatnot commonly sponsor for Product Lead roles?
Whatnot supports a range of visa categories for Product Leads, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates, and Green Card pathways through EB-2 and EB-3. The right category depends on your nationality, current status, and how long you've been in the U.S. Confirming your eligibility before your first recruiter conversation keeps the process clean.
What qualifications are expected for a Product Lead role at Whatnot?
Whatnot typically looks for Product Leads with experience owning a full product area end-to-end, not just contributing to one. Given the live commerce model, familiarity with marketplace dynamics, seller tooling, or real-time consumer products carries real weight. A bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as computer science, business, or engineering is standard, and USCIS will require that your degree directly supports the role for visa sponsorship purposes.
How do I apply for Product Lead jobs at Whatnot?
You can find and apply for Product Lead roles at Whatnot through Migrate Mate, which filters open positions by visa sponsorship availability so you only see roles where you're eligible. When you apply, tailor your materials to Whatnot's marketplace context, specifically how you've driven measurable outcomes in buyer or seller product areas. Be ready to discuss sponsorship needs early in the recruiter screen since Whatnot's hiring team engages on that topic upfront.
How do I manage the timeline between receiving an offer and starting work at Whatnot?
The timeline depends on your visa category. F-1 OPT authorization can take 90 days or more from the date your Designated School Official submits the application, so start that process before your job search concludes. H-1B transfers from another employer allow you to start once USCIS receives the petition. For new H-1B cap filings, the earliest possible start date is October 1, which means you'll need an offer in place well before the April registration window opens.
