Role
Whatnot's Backend Platforms team owns the backend that powers live commerce at scale: the Python and Elixir cores, the realtime services behind every livestream and auction, and the storage and database layer the rest of engineering builds on. The work compounds: every improvement to these platforms raises the floor for hundreds of engineers and millions of buyers and sellers.
As a senior leader in our Infrastructure organization, you will own the strategy and execution of Backend Platforms. You will manage senior ICs and, as the team grows, other engineering managers, shaping org structure, developing leaders, and setting strategy across multiple workstreams. You will partner with engineering teams across the company to accelerate delivery and ensure Whatnot's platform scales with the business.
We're looking for a technically strong manager. You should be comfortable rolling up your sleeves and getting into the details: reviewing designs, pressure-testing architectural decisions, debugging production issues alongside the team, and writing code when the moment calls for it. You don't need to be the deepest engineer in the room, but you need to be credible enough to earn the trust of a senior team and engaged enough to know when something is off.
We offer flexibility to work from home or from one of our global office hubs, and we value in-person time for planning, problem-solving, and connection. Team members in this role must live within commuting distance of our San Francisco, Los Angeles or Seattle hubs.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and grow a team of senior software engineers and, over time, other engineering managers. Hire well, develop leaders, and shape the org as it scales.
- Own team strategy and execution. Empower senior ICs to define technical direction and architecture, while staying technically engaged enough to challenge decisions, unblock tradeoffs, and step in when course-correction is needed.
- Shape the Backend Platforms roadmap, balancing investment across new capabilities, developer productivity, and platform-level tech debt.
- Lead the team in evolving Whatnot's Python and Elixir backend cores: the Main Back End, async and messaging infrastructure, and the storage and database layer underneath.
- Own the platforms behind Whatnot's realtime product surface, including Live Service and Auction Service, which power the livestream and bidding experience at the heart of the business.
- Drive measurable improvements in platform reliability, performance, and developer ergonomics across the systems this team owns.
- Partner with Reliability, Infrastructure, and product engineering teams to shape architecture and standards across Whatnot.
- Build a culture of engineering and operational excellence: high code quality, clear ownership, disciplined deprecation, and accountability for production behavior.
You
In addition to embodying our cultural principles, great candidates will also have:
- 10+ years of industry experience in platform or infrastructure engineering, with 7+ years managing engineering teams. Experience managing managers or leading multiple teams is strongly preferred.
- A high bar for both engineering and operational excellence. You're energized by building backend platforms the rest of engineering depends on, and you take pride in owning how those systems behave in production.
- Proven track record building and operating backend platforms or runtime services used by other engineering teams as customers.
- Strong technical grounding in backend systems at scale, including high-traffic realtime or event-driven platforms. Whatnot's backend runs on Python and Elixir, with Go used for performance-sensitive components. Direct experience with any of these is a plus; equally strong candidates from other modern backend stacks who are eager to learn are welcome.
- Demonstrated ability to steward technical direction across multiple workstreams and guide senior ICs through complex architectural decisions and platform migrations.
- Exceptional communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence technical direction across teams and at the executive level.
Benefits
- Flexible Time off Policy and Company-wide Holidays (including a spring and winter break)
- Health Insurance options including Medical, Dental, Vision
- Work From Home Support
- Home office setup allowance
- Monthly allowance for cell phone and internet
- Care benefits
- Monthly allowance for wellness

- Lifetime benefit for family planning, such as adoption or fertility expenses
- Retirement; 401k offering for Traditional and Roth accounts in the US (employer match up to 4% of base salary) and Pension plans internationally

Tailor your resume to Whatnot's stack
Whatnot's engineering roles lean heavily on distributed systems, real-time infrastructure, and marketplace scalability. Highlight experience with high-throughput backends or mobile platforms explicitly, since generic software engineering resumes get filtered before sponsorship conversations even start.
Verify your visa type before applying
Whatnot sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, J-1, and Green Card pathways. Confirm your specific category is listed before reaching out to recruiters, since asking about unsupported visa types early can end conversations that would otherwise go forward.
Time your application around OPT cap-gap risk
If you're on F-1 OPT, the 60-day grace period and cap-gap rules mean your application timeline needs to align with the April H-1B filing window. Starting your Whatnot job search by January gives you realistic runway to secure an offer before the registration deadline.
Research open roles on Migrate Mate first
Whatnot lists engineering openings across multiple specializations. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Whatnot roles that confirm visa sponsorship, so you're applying to positions where authorization support is already confirmed rather than assuming it from the job description.
Prepare for a technical loop before visa discussions
Whatnot's engineering interview process typically involves multiple technical rounds covering systems design and coding before any offer or sponsorship conversation happens. Get your technical preparation solid first, since immigration logistics only become relevant after you clear the hiring bar.
Understand LCA timing once you have an offer
Your employer must file a certified Labor Condition Application with the DOL before USCIS can process your H-1B or E-3 petition. Ask your recruiter early whether Whatnot uses an in-house immigration team or outside counsel, since that affects how quickly paperwork moves after your offer letter is signed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Whatnot sponsor H-1B visas for Engineers?
Yes, Whatnot sponsors H-1B visas for engineering roles. The company has an active sponsorship track record across its technical functions. Because H-1B approval depends on the annual lottery run by USCIS each April, timing your offer and onboarding around the registration window is critical. Roles requiring immediate start dates may pair H-1B sponsorship with a cap-exempt or interim work authorization strategy.
How do I apply for Engineering jobs at Whatnot?
Search for open engineering roles on Whatnot's careers page or browse confirmed sponsorship-eligible positions on Migrate Mate. Apply directly through the job listing and indicate your visa status in the application where prompted. Whatnot's recruiting process typically includes an initial screen, technical assessments, and a multi-round interview loop before an offer is extended.
Which visa types does Whatnot sponsor for Engineering roles?
Whatnot sponsors a broad range of visa categories for engineering hires, including H-1B, E-3 visa (for Australian citizens), TN visa (for Canadian and Mexican nationals), F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, J-1 visa, and employment-based Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3. The right category depends on your nationality, current status, and the specific role. Confirming your visa type matches what the role supports before applying saves time.
What qualifications does Whatnot expect from Engineering candidates?
Whatnot's engineering roles generally require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related technical field. For H-1B eligibility, the role must qualify as a specialty occupation under USCIS criteria, which means the degree requirement needs to be tied directly to the position. Roles in backend infrastructure, mobile development, and platform reliability are well-represented in Whatnot's engineering hiring.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Whatnot Engineering role?
Timeline depends on your visa type. H-1B petitions filed in April have an October 1 start date, creating a built-in waiting period after your offer. E-3 and TN visas can move faster, often within a few weeks of an offer, since neither requires a lottery. USCIS premium processing is available for H-1B petitions and cuts the adjudication window significantly. Confirm your preferred start date with the recruiter early so both sides can plan around the filing calendar.
