What you'll do:

- Prototype, deploy, and productionalize novel ML architectures that directly shape user experience and marketplace dynamics.
- Design and scale inference infrastructure capable of serving large models with low latency and high throughput.
- Build distributed training and inference pipelines leveraging GPUs and both model and data parallelism.
- Stretch beyond your comfort zone to take on new technical challenges as we scale AI across Whatnot’s ecosystem.
US Based: We offer flexibility to work from home or from one of our global office hubs, and we value in-person time for planning, problem-solving, and connection. Team members in this role must live within commuting distance of our New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco hubs.

- Ability to work autonomously and drive initiatives across multiple product areas and communicate findings with leadership and product teams.
- Experience with operational, search, and key-value databases such as PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Elasticsearch, Redis.
- Firm grasp of visualization tools for monitoring and logging e.g. DataDog, Grafana.
- Familiarity with cloud computing platforms and managed services such as AWS Sagemaker, Lambda, Kinesis, S3, EC2, EKS/ECS, Apache Kafka, Flink.
- Professionalism around collaborating in a remote working environment and well tested, reproducible work.

Tailor your portfolio to live commerce ML
Whatnot's ML work centers on real-time ranking, personalization, and trust and safety. Projects demonstrating low-latency inference, recommendation systems, or anomaly detection in high-throughput environments will resonate far more than general deep learning work.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open ML roles
Whatnot posts ML Software Engineer roles across seniority levels at different times. Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for Whatnot openings with visa sponsorship confirmed, so you're not manually tracking their careers page for new postings.
Prepare your specialty occupation documentation early
For H-1B petitions, USCIS requires evidence that the role qualifies as a specialty occupation. Gather your degree transcripts, any credential evaluations for non-U.S. degrees, and a detailed offer letter that specifies the ML-specific technical requirements of the position.
Understand how E-3 fits retail-sector ML roles
Australian citizens applying for E-3 sponsorship at Whatnot should confirm the job posting explicitly requires a relevant bachelor's degree or higher. Retail-sector ML roles can attract scrutiny on specialty occupation grounds if the degree-to-role connection isn't clearly documented.
Align your start date with USCIS processing windows
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only take effect on October 1. If you receive an offer mid-year, work with Whatnot's immigration team to determine whether premium processing or a cap-exempt filing path applies to your situation.

Find ML Software Engineer at Whatnot JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Whatnot sponsor H-1B visas for ML Software Engineers?
Yes, Whatnot sponsors H-1B visas for ML Software Engineers. The company has an active sponsorship track record across this function, which aligns with their need to hire specialized ML talent in a competitive market. If you're cap-subject, your petition would need to clear the annual H-1B lottery before USCIS adjudicates it, with an earliest start date of October 1.
How do I apply for ML Software Engineer jobs at Whatnot?
You can apply directly through Whatnot's careers page or find their open ML Software Engineer roles filtered by visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate. The interview process typically involves a technical screen, ML system design, and coding rounds. Communicating your visa status early in the process helps the team plan sponsorship logistics alongside your candidacy.
Which visa types does Whatnot commonly sponsor for ML Software Engineers?
Whatnot sponsors a range of visa categories for this role, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for students, J-1, and employment-based Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3. The right category depends on your nationality, degree, and current immigration status.
What qualifications does Whatnot expect for ML Software Engineer roles?
Whatnot's ML roles typically require a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, machine learning, statistics, or a closely related field. Practical experience with recommendation systems, real-time ML pipelines, or trust and safety modeling is particularly relevant given their livestream commerce platform. Strong Python skills and familiarity with large-scale data infrastructure are consistently expected across seniority levels.
How do I plan my timeline if Whatnot is sponsoring my H-1B?
H-1B registration opens each March for a lottery that determines who can file. If selected, your employer files the full petition between April and June, and employment can begin October 1 at the earliest. If you're on F-1 OPT when you receive your offer, confirm your OPT expiration date, as a cap-gap extension may bridge the gap while USCIS processes your petition.
