ROLE
The Fraud Experience team builds intelligent, real-time systems that safeguard Whatnot’s marketplace from malicious activity. We design, develop, and deploy end-to-end, ML-driven systems that proactively identify and mitigate fraud — blending real-time detection with transparent, user-centered enforcement.
- Lead the full architecture of fraud detection, prevention, and intervention systems — spanning machine learning, backend, and client-side components.
- Build intelligent user graphs to model behavioral patterns, detect collusion networks, and uncover account connectivity at scale.
- Design, train, and deploy both traditional ML and LLM-powered models to detect fraudulent activity across users, payments, and marketplace interactions.
- Develop scalable data pipelines and real-time inference systems capable of supporting high-volume, low-latency ML workloads.
- Create human-in-the-loop systems that continuously refine detection accuracy and adapt to evolving adversarial tactics.
- Perform deep behavioral and adversarial data analysis to surface emerging fraud trends and drive continuous system improvement.
- Stay ahead of the curve by translating new insights into adaptive, production-ready systems that evolve as fast as our adversaries.
We offer flexibility to work from home or from one of our global office hubs, and we value in-person time for planning, problem-solving, and connection. Team members in this role must live within commuting distance of our Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco or Seattle hub.

Tailor your resume to live commerce systems
Whatnot's engineering teams build real-time auction and streaming infrastructure. Highlighting experience with low-latency systems, event-driven architecture, or marketplace platforms signals direct relevance to their core technical problems before a recruiter even opens your application.
Verify your OPT cap-gap timing before interviewing
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your H-1B cap-gap window aligns with Whatnot's onboarding timeline. USCIS cap-gap protection only applies if your employer files before your OPT expires, so build that deadline into your offer negotiation.
Ask about LCA posting requirements during offer review
Before signing, confirm your work location triggers the correct DOL Labor Condition Application prevailing wage level. Remote roles at Whatnot can involve a different worksite wage determination than their California headquarters, which affects your LCA filing and H-1B petition.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Software Developer openings by visa type
Whatnot posts Software Developer roles across different engineering domains. Use Migrate Mate to filter active openings by the visa categories they sponsor, so you're only spending time on roles where your status is already a fit.
Prepare documentation showing degree-to-role alignment
H-1B specialty occupation approval depends on your degree field matching the Software Developer role's requirements. Gather transcripts and any credential evaluations early. USCIS scrutinizes this alignment, and gaps in documentation are a common source of Requests for Evidence.
Clarify E-3 or TN eligibility before the offer stage
Australian and Canadian or Mexican Software Developers can pursue E-3 or TN status without entering the H-1B lottery. Raise your nationality with Whatnot's recruiting team early so their immigration counsel can plan the correct petition type from the start.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Whatnot sponsor H-1B visas for Software Developers?
Yes, Whatnot sponsors H-1B visas for Software Developer roles. Their engineering teams have an active sponsorship history across this function. Because H-1B cap-subject petitions require USCIS lottery selection each April for an October 1 start date, your offer timing relative to the annual registration window matters. Coordinate with Whatnot's recruiting team early to understand how they plan petitions around that cycle.
How do I apply for Software Developer jobs at Whatnot?
Applications go through Whatnot's careers page, where roles are listed by engineering team and location. Before applying, browse available Software Developer openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate, so you can prioritize roles that already match your status. Tailor your application materials to Whatnot's live commerce and real-time systems infrastructure to strengthen your candidacy.
Which visa types does Whatnot commonly use for Software Developer roles?
Whatnot sponsors several visa types for Software Developers, including H-1B, E-3 visa for Australian citizens, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for students, J-1 visa for exchange visitors, and employment-based Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3. The right category depends on your nationality, degree, and career stage, so it's worth confirming with Whatnot's immigration counsel which route fits your situation.
What qualifications does Whatnot look for in Software Developer candidates?
Whatnot's engineering roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. Practical experience with distributed systems, real-time data pipelines, or marketplace platforms is particularly relevant given their live commerce product. For H-1B sponsorship, your degree field needs to align with the specific role's specialty occupation requirements under USCIS guidelines.
How do I time my application to align with Whatnot's sponsorship process?
If you're pursuing an H-1B, USCIS opens cap-subject registration in March for an October 1 start. That means securing an offer from Whatnot by late February gives their immigration team enough runway to prepare your petition before the window closes. For E-3 and TN applicants, no annual cap applies, so those petitions can be filed year-round and generally move faster than H-1B cap-subject cases.
