INTRODUCTION
The MongoDB Product Security organization is a diverse collection of individuals working together to scale MongoDB’s security, both security of the products themselves and the security features we offer to customers. The team is responsible for the MongoDB Database Server (Community and Enterprise editions). The MongoDB Product Security organization works with software engineers to design, implement, and operate systems in a manner that protects customer data. It is a multidisciplinary team that covers product, software, cloud, infrastructure, and operational security concerns.
The team does the following:
- Build a developer driven security program where there is tight integration with engineering artifacts, process, and tooling
- Use software architecture and coding patterns to reduce the impact of security issues
- Be security subject matter experts for our tech stack and products
This role can be based out of any MongoDB U.S. office or remotely within the United States.
WHO YOU ARE
With a strong security engineering background, you’re looking for a role that gives you the freedom to increase MongoDB’s resonance with customers by strengthening our core database products. You’re passionate about solving hard security engineering problems while putting a strong emphasis on customer experience, leveraging your own significant experience. You enjoy collaborating with different teams to innovate and implement pragmatic solutions.
Responsibilities
- You will take ownership, define strategy, and drive improvement for parts of our program such as fuzzing, threat modeling, secrets management, or container security
- You will support engineering teams when they respond to security issues, such as providing risk analysis and proof of concept
- Advocate for and contribute to complex security projects from inception through completion
- Drive architecture, patterns, and processes across Server Engineering that make security the easiest path
- Partner closely with engineering teams to design and implement security controls across our software and systems
- Research and POC new attacks against our systems. Plan and perform product security assessments including architecture review threat modeling, code review, pen testing and general security consulting to proactively build security controls
- Serve as a security subject matter expert for software security and architecture
- Educate the engineering org on security through CTFs, lunch-and-learns, and one-on-one mentorship
REQUIREMENTS
- 3 years of experience in application security, software security, or product security
- Demonstrated experience in C++ programming, performing security assessments on low-level codebases, and implementing remediation strategies for memory-related security flaws such as buffer overflows and memory leaks
- Scripting experience and ability to contribute code back to our environments
- Comfortable leading threat modeling and being a security ambassador to other engineering teams
- Communicate complex technical issues in a simple manner that builds trust with a variety of audiences
- A strong sense of ownership and delivery
- Can facilitate a conversation rather than dominate it
- Skilled at providing collaborative, actionable feedback, not just a list of flaws
NICE TO HAVES
- Subject matter expertise in database security, or data security
- Knowledge of database engines, database internals, or applied cryptography
- Experience contributing or partnering with security researchers to identify vulnerabilities that eventually are published CVEs or administrative responsibilities of a CNA

Frame Your Portfolio Around Developer Products
MongoDB evaluates Product Leads on experience owning technical products for developer or data audiences. Document shipped features, API decisions, or platform migrations in your portfolio before applying. Generic enterprise product experience won't land the same way.
Identify Roles That Match Your Visa Category
MongoDB sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, and F-1 OPT for Product Lead positions. Cross-reference open roles against your eligibility before applying. Use Migrate Mate to filter MongoDB's Product Lead openings by the visa types you qualify for.
Get Your LCA Timing Right
Your employer files the Labor Condition Application with DOL before the H-1B petition reaches USCIS. For Product Lead roles with equity components, confirm with your recruiter that the offered salary meets the prevailing wage threshold for the specific work location, not just headquarters.
Clarify OPT Cap-Gap Coverage Early
If you're on F-1 OPT and MongoDB submits your H-1B petition before your OPT expires, cap-gap protections extend your work authorization through September 30. Confirm your OPT end date relative to the H-1B filing window before accepting an offer timeline.
Target Teams With Active Platform Initiatives
MongoDB's Atlas and developer data platform teams historically hire Product Leads with cloud infrastructure or developer tooling backgrounds. Focusing your outreach on these teams rather than applying broadly increases the chance your application reaches a hiring manager with an active headcount.
Prepare Specialty Occupation Evidence for Your Role
USCIS scrutinizes Product Lead petitions more than engineering roles because the degree requirement connection is less automatic. Gather documentation showing your specific role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field, such as computer science, information systems, or engineering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does MongoDB sponsor H-1B visas for Product Leads?
Yes, MongoDB sponsors H-1B visas for Product Lead roles. Because Product Lead is classified as a specialty occupation, your petition needs to demonstrate that the position requires a degree in a specific technical or business field. MongoDB's recruiting team typically initiates the Labor Condition Application process through DOL after an offer is extended, so confirm the timeline with your recruiter early.
Which visa types does MongoDB commonly use for Product Lead roles?
MongoDB sponsors H-1B, E-3 visa, TN visa, EB-2, EB-3, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT for Product Lead positions. Australian citizens typically pursue the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and renews in two-year increments. Canadian and Mexican nationals on TN visa status can qualify under the management consultant or computer systems analyst categories depending on role scope. F-1 OPT is common for recent graduates entering associate product roles before transitioning to H-1B.
How do I apply for Product Lead jobs at MongoDB?
MongoDB posts Product Lead openings on its careers site, and roles are also accessible through Migrate Mate, which lets you filter specifically for positions where MongoDB has a sponsorship history. Tailor your application to highlight experience with developer-facing or data platform products. MongoDB's interview process for Product Leads typically involves a product sense screen, a technical depth interview, and a cross-functional leadership assessment, so prepare case studies from your existing portfolio.
What qualifications does MongoDB expect from Product Lead candidates?
MongoDB Product Lead roles generally require experience owning a technical product end-to-end, familiarity with developer workflows or data infrastructure, and the ability to work directly with engineering and design teams. A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field strengthens both your candidacy and your H-1B specialty occupation claim. Demonstrated experience with cloud-native or API-driven products is a consistent signal across MongoDB's Product Lead job descriptions.
How do I time my visa sponsorship process when interviewing at MongoDB?
H-1B petitions are filed in April for an October 1 start, so if you receive an offer outside that window, MongoDB may bridge your status through OPT cap-gap or a change of status filing. E-3 and TN processing moves faster and isn't lottery-dependent, so timelines are more flexible. Raise your visa situation with the recruiter before the offer stage so MongoDB's immigration counsel can map out your specific filing sequence without delaying your start date.
