Role
The Data Platform team at Whatnot builds services that improve our core product experience and unlock meaningful business value. In this role, you will:
- Define technical direction and lead development of critical data platform systems that power next-generation capabilities at Whatnot
- Lead the buildout and evolution of our data orchestration and streaming platforms, helping drive them from early platform investment to production-ready usage across the company
- Design scalable, reliable, multi-tenant data infrastructure rather than simply building pipelines on top of an existing platform
- Own core platform concerns including scalability, performance, reliability, SLOs, and operational excellence for data processing systems
- Build high-quality systems that support real-time analytics, event-driven applications, and machine learning infrastructure needs across Whatnot
- Make key decisions about how data systems should be integrated across Whatnot, and then partner cross-functionally to bring that architecture to life
- Collaborate closely with engineering partners across product, platform, machine learning, and data to enable fast, safe, and scalable development
- Help shape broader company architecture across orchestration, stream processing, real-time systems, analytics, and content understanding
- Apply DevOps/SRE practices, including CI/CD, infrastructure automation, monitoring, and incident response, to keep platform systems reliable at scale
- Help define and enforce data governance and compliance standards across our data lake and downstream systems
You
As our next Software Engineer, Data Platform, you should have 8+ years of experience, plus:
- Ability to write well-tested, API-driven applications and services that run at scale in production
- Track record of building scalable, high-performance distributed systems
- Strong experience with streaming data systems (e.g., Kafka, Flink, or Pulsar) and/or orchestration platforms (e.g., Airflow, Dagster, or Temporal), with particular strength in building or evolving the platform layer itself, not just downstream pipelines
- Hands-on experience designing and operating stateful, real-time data pipelines at scale, including concepts like checkpointing, state management, and watermarking
- Experience evaluating architectural tradeoffs in data processing and orchestration systems, including when a given tool is the right solution and when it is not
- Experience building multi-tenant or end-to-end data infrastructure that supports multiple teams or production use cases
- Expertise in managing cloud data stores (Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, etc.) and data lake architectures (e.g., AWS S3) for processing and serving data products
- Strong experience supporting operational systems to ensure uptime, reliability, and maintainability, including monitoring, alerting, and incident management
- Familiarity with DevOps/SRE practices and CI/CD tooling, including GitHub and GitHub Actions
- Understanding of data governance and compliance principles (e.g., data access controls, retention policies, auditability)
In addition to these role-specific qualifications, all engineering team members are expected to have:
- Experience managing cloud technologies (AWS or Google Cloud) and comfort with infrastructure-as-code approaches (for example, Terraform)
- Proficiency in at least one server-side programming language (preferably Python), common algorithms and data structures, and software design principles
- Self-starter ethic, with the ability to thrive under a high level of autonomy
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills

Frame your portfolio around commerce data
Whatnot operates a live shopping marketplace, so analysts who can demonstrate experience with transaction data, funnel analysis, or marketplace metrics stand out. Build case studies that mirror the problems a retail platform actually faces.
Target roles that match your visa timeline
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your STEM extension eligibility before applying. Whatnot sponsors multiple visa types, but the right fit between role seniority and your current status affects how quickly the process can move.
Find open Data Analyst roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Whatnot's open Data Analyst positions by visa type, so you can confirm sponsorship eligibility before applying. Search by the visa types Whatnot sponsors to focus your applications where you're actually a fit.
Ask about LCA filing timing during offers
The Labor Condition Application must be certified by DOL before your H-1B or E-3 petition is filed. When you reach the offer stage, ask the recruiter how long the internal approval and DOL certification process typically takes at Whatnot.
Prepare for SQL and experimentation-heavy interviews
Whatnot's analyst interviews typically involve hands-on SQL and A/B testing scenarios tied to platform growth. Review how live commerce platforms measure seller acquisition, retention, and take-rate to answer case questions in context.
Verify your employer's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
F-1 CPT and OPT authorization requires your employer to participate in E-Verify. Confirm Whatnot's enrollment status through the E-Verify employer search before countersigning an offer, especially if your work authorization depends on it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Whatnot sponsor H-1B visas for Data Analysts?
Yes, Whatnot sponsors H-1B visas for Data Analyst roles. Because H-1B cap-subject petitions are tied to the annual lottery, timing matters. If you're already in H-1B status or transferring from another employer, Whatnot can file a transfer petition year-round without waiting for the next lottery cycle.
How do I apply for Data Analyst jobs at Whatnot?
Apply through Whatnot's careers page or browse their open Data Analyst positions on Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm eligibility upfront. Tailor your application to Whatnot's live commerce context, emphasizing experience with marketplace data, product analytics, or growth metrics relevant to a retail platform.
Which visa types does Whatnot commonly sponsor for Data Analyst roles?
Whatnot sponsors a range of visa types for analytical roles, including H-1B, E-3 visa for Australian citizens, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for students, J-1 visa, and employment-based Green Cards through EB-2 and EB-3 pathways. The right category depends on your nationality, degree, and current immigration status.
What qualifications does Whatnot expect for Data Analyst roles?
Most Data Analyst openings at Whatnot expect proficiency in SQL, experience with data visualization tools, and a background in product or business analytics. A bachelor's degree in a quantitative field is standard, and experience in e-commerce, marketplace platforms, or consumer technology is a strong differentiator given the live shopping context of the business.
How do I think about the visa filing timeline after receiving an offer?
Timeline depends on your visa type. For H-1B transfers or E-3 petitions, plan for two to four weeks of internal processing before USCIS or consular filing begins. If you're transitioning from OPT, confirm your grace period and any cap-gap coverage with your immigration attorney so there's no gap in your work authorization between your OPT end date and H-1B start date.
