Align your credentials with WPI's project model
WPI's curriculum is built around project-based learning, so framing your teaching experience around hands-on, interdisciplinary instruction strengthens your application. Adjunct roles here favor candidates whose background connects directly to WPI's project terms and competency centers.
Confirm your degree field matches the course
H-1B eligibility for adjunct positions requires a specialty occupation match between your degree and the specific course you'd teach. A mismatch, like a general business degree supporting a quantitative finance course, can cause USCIS to issue a Request for Evidence.
Target departments with recurring adjunct openings
WPI consistently posts adjunct roles across its engineering, data science, and business programs. Focusing your outreach on departments that hire repeatedly each semester improves your odds of landing a role that supports a sponsorship conversation with HR.
Ask HR about cap-exempt H-1B filing early
As a higher education institution, WPI qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, meaning petitions can be filed at any time of year without waiting for the April lottery. Raise this directly with HR before accepting an offer so there are no delays in filing.
Use Migrate Mate to find open adjunct roles at WPI
Adjunct openings at WPI are posted across multiple channels and can close quickly. Use Migrate Mate to filter for Adjunct Instructor positions at WPI that explicitly include visa sponsorship, so you're only applying where sponsorship is already on the table.
Prepare your J-1 or TN documentation before the offer
If you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship, TN status for professors can be obtained at the port of entry with a letter from WPI confirming your role and qualifications. J-1 scholars sponsored through WPI's international office follow a separate DS-2019 process, so clarify which pathway applies before your start date.

Find Adjunct Instructor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Worcester Polytechnic Institute sponsor H-1B visas for Adjunct Instructors?
Yes. As a nonprofit higher education institution, WPI qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, which means it can file H-1B petitions year-round without going through the annual lottery. Adjunct Instructor roles that meet the specialty occupation standard, where a specific degree field is required to perform the job, are eligible for sponsorship. You'll need to work with WPI's HR and international office to initiate the petition.
Which visa types are commonly used for Adjunct Instructor roles at Worcester Polytechnic Institute?
WPI sponsors several visa categories for instructional staff. H-1B is the most common for long-term adjunct roles requiring a specialty degree. J-1 is frequently used for visiting scholars and short-term teaching appointments. TN status is an option for Canadian and Mexican citizens teaching in qualifying academic fields. F-1 OPT and CPT can support adjunct work for current international students, subject to authorization limits.
What qualifications does Worcester Polytechnic Institute expect for Adjunct Instructor positions?
Most adjunct openings at WPI require at minimum a master's degree in a field directly related to the course being taught, with a doctorate preferred for upper-division or graduate-level sections. Practical industry experience is weighted heavily in applied and engineering programs. Teaching experience, particularly with project-based or experiential learning formats, strengthens candidacy given WPI's distinctive academic model.
How do I apply for Adjunct Instructor jobs at Worcester Polytechnic Institute?
Applications go through WPI's official careers portal, where adjunct postings are listed by department and term. You can also browse current openings that include visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for WPI roles open to sponsored candidates. Tailor your application materials to WPI's project-based curriculum, and follow up directly with the hiring department if you haven't heard back within two to three weeks of applying.
How do I time my visa filing if I'm starting an Adjunct Instructor role at WPI mid-semester?
Because WPI is cap-exempt, H-1B petitions can be filed at any point in the year with no lottery delay. Standard USCIS processing takes two to four months, so initiating paperwork at least three months before your intended start date is advisable. Premium processing reduces adjudication to around 15 business days if your start date is tight. For J-1 appointments, DS-2019 issuance typically takes four to six weeks through WPI's international office.
