Align your credentials to WPI's curriculum
WPI's project-based curriculum means Teaching roles often require demonstrated experience with hands-on or interdisciplinary instruction. Tailor your CV and cover letter to show how your teaching philosophy fits their learn-by-doing model, not just your research output.
Verify your degree meets specialty occupation standards
For H-1B sponsorship, USCIS requires your role to qualify as a specialty occupation. Teaching positions at universities generally satisfy this, but your degree field must directly relate to the courses you'd teach. A mismatch here can trigger a Request for Evidence.
Target departments with active hiring cycles
WPI's strongest Teaching openings tend to cluster in STEM and engineering departments. Monitor their faculty hiring announcements from late summer through fall, when academic year positions are posted, to apply before searches close.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Teaching roles at WPI
Searching for visa-sponsoring academic employers manually is slow. Migrate Mate lets you filter Teaching jobs at WPI specifically by visa type, so you can confirm active openings before investing time in a full academic application packet.
Understand J-1 restrictions before accepting an offer
WPI sponsors J-1 visas, but some J-1 exchange visitor categories carry a two-year home residency requirement. If your J-1 includes that restriction, you'll need a waiver before WPI can sponsor an H-1B, and that process adds months to your timeline.

Find Teaching at Worcester Polytechnic Institute JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Worcester Polytechnic Institute sponsor H-1B visas for Teachers?
Yes, WPI sponsors H-1B visas for Teaching roles that qualify as specialty occupations, which faculty and instructor positions at accredited universities typically do. As a university employer, WPI is cap-exempt, meaning your petition is not subject to the annual H-1B lottery and can be filed at any point in the year.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at Worcester Polytechnic Institute?
Applications for Teaching roles at WPI are submitted through their official careers portal. Most faculty and instructor searches require a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching statement, and professional references. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse current WPI Teaching openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility before beginning your application.
Which visa types does WPI commonly use for Teaching roles?
WPI sponsors H-1B visas for most longer-term Teaching positions and J-1 Exchange Visitor visas for visiting faculty or short-term instructional roles. F-1 OPT and CPT are also used for graduate teaching assistants. For permanent positions, WPI can sponsor EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card pathways through the PERM labor certification process filed with the DOL.
What qualifications does WPI expect for Teaching roles?
Most Teaching positions at WPI require at minimum a master's degree, with a terminal degree such as a Ph.D. expected for full faculty roles in STEM or engineering fields. WPI's project-based learning model means they also look for candidates with demonstrated experience designing applied, hands-on coursework alongside conventional lecture instruction.
How do I plan my timeline around WPI's visa sponsorship process?
Because WPI is cap-exempt, H-1B petitions can be filed year-round, which removes the April lottery deadline pressure that affects most employers. Build in at least two to three months between an accepted offer and your intended start date to allow for LCA certification with the DOL and USCIS processing. If your position involves a J-1 with a two-year home residency requirement, factor in additional time for a waiver before any H-1B transfer.
